My nephew is a Lt. JG in the USCG and attending flight school in Pensacola, and my kid sis lives down the coast in Cape Coral, one day I'll visit her and same some Snook, Sea Trout, and Redfish fishing, and maybe even Tarpon at Boca Grande. I never thought of the Gulf Coast of Florida having nice beaches but I was mistaken. Did you catch that large squid yourself? Looks yummy!
CUTE little grand daughter by the way, she's a doll.
I was a navybrat(Father Intruder bombadier-nam).I have been to beaches on the east coast from Cape May,NJ to Key West,FL(NJ,VA,NC,SC,GA,Fla etc)and can say without hesitation that Destin/ Okaloosa island Beaches are absolute Jaw dropping! The sand is finer than granulated sugar(almost a powder) and virgin snow white. The water is so clear that you notice the Emerald green light reflection glow in the waves. This stretch of the florida gulfcoast is called the Emerald Coast.Pensacola is not far from Fort Walton/OkaloosaIsland(national seashore-my favorite)/Destin.Yup,I love Squiding. I long line during the afterdark low tide portion of the springtide for shark from the end of the Pier. The shark setup is 12/0 senator loaded with 100# test Mono(100# test Dacron Backing of course)and Stand up rod(fight'n belt and harness of course).Terminal leader is 600# steel cable and 12/0 Mustad Tuna hook rigged to 5# Bonita.Since like minded people showup for pursuit of shark there is enough people around to pull the sharkup( by Heavy Nylon rope lassoed to the tail)30' to the piertop! After Fighting my shark for 30 minutes(two 300 yard runs)it took 5 grown men to pull Mr Sharkup.BillyClub anyone.

The Two Piers I fish off catch blue water eddies.I have witnessed people catch Cobia, El Dorado,King Mackeral,Sailfish and Tuna(Black & Yellowfin)dependent upon season. The largest shark landed on the PCB pier was a $475# hammerhead(July is hammerhead mating season).People also pier catch Bluefish,Flounder,Gator trout,Pompano,Mangrove snapper,Sheepshead and Spanish Mackeral.Squiding is practiced also.

My wife is from the Pensacola area, her brother now lives in Green Cove Springs (near Jacksonville) and the God-son lives in Clearwater. All are great places.
Gigging flounder is about the best if you ask me... Squid? Not for me.
Ji, thanks for the link to Adirondack Guide Boats new dory. That's neat! Might be better for the wife than the guide boat. We knew somebody on Lake George who had a dory he carted around, it rowed like a guide boat but you could stand on the gunnels and it wouldn't go over. I don't know if it was a Bolger design or not. Neat boat!
Sincerely,

Ji, this post and your other with the canoe made me get my canoe out the last three nights. Last night, I went out by myself, with my 1 oz fly rod (2 Wt) and paddled along the shore trying to coax the bass to take a fly. I didn't get any bass but I landed a mess of bluegills and had a great time. thanks for the inspiration.

WOW a 2 weight flyrod? I'm sure even the Bluegills put a healthy bend in that, sounds like fun. I LOVE to fish for Smallmouth Bass using ultralight spinning tackle. The lightest flyrod I have is 5 weight which I've caught Smallmouth on using shrimp imitations. My other 2 flyrods are 9/10, and 11/12 weights for larger saltwater gamesters which I should get back into after an absence of 12 years (on Maui) since Oahu where I live now has numerous flats with Bonefish, Barracuda, and Trevally lurking, my 2 outrigger canoes should make perfect flats boats. I just this past Sunday afternoon made a new outrigger out of a pool noodle for my 40 pound 11' canoe which fits in my truck bed nicely, now you're inspiring me!
Here's a picture of the new outrigger on my canoe:
Thank you all for the positive comments, great to share my love of the ocean with you folks. Just wanted to share a couple more pictures first 2 of little canoe with my first design lobster pot float outrigger, and second pair of pictures my Hawaiianized Grumman aluminum canoe "Makule Akule". Thanks again!
Nice pictures Ji. What kind of fish are you using that bait in the last photo for? Taking kids with you and teaching them to fish is what makes it all worthwhile. Your Dad would surely be proud.
