Lyman #21 sight install on my Win 1895 - help!

Post by O.S.O.K. »

OK, I've got a refinished 1895 chambered in 30 US that I want to install an aperture sight on. I have the sight from Buffalo Arms and it did come with some instructions. I also have a schematic and a disassembly instruction page from rarewinchesters.com.

All's I need to do is get the bolt out of the receiver so that I can drill the rear mount hole (sight comes with drill and tap). I understand how to place the sight so that it will adjust correctly.

The disassembly, even with schematic and instructions is clear as mud to me.

I'm reasonably skilled for a hobbyist but this one looks like a real booger.

Keep in mind, I've taken down and reassembled the likes of the Portuguese Mauser's bolt (which is very convoluted).

This may be very easy, I just need some simple step by step instructions to get the bolt out - I don't want to take the mag off or lever off, etc. unless I have to.

Help!

ETA - there's no way I would do this if it was in original condition. The refinish involved a complete reblue and I think the barrel was shortened a couple of inches - it definately has a new non-standard crown.... so I don't mind drilling the hole for the sight.

reading the disassebly instructions (which are kind of vague) it looks like I have to take the mag and hammer out - along with the locking bolt.... sheesh.

I'm begining to have second thoughts - this is very complicated.

The beauty of my Marlins is becoming more and more evident....

wow, nothing like replying to your own post!

I just went out and read the directions that came with the sight - it indicated that all's that was needed was to push out the linkage pin that holds the lever to the bolt - I removed the screw on the left side and slid a push pin though the hole on the right side (with the bolt closed) and viola' the pin slid out to the left and released the lever which allows the bolt to come out in one piece - no further disassebly required.

So, never mind

I'll post pics of the final results when I'm done.

little OT...written instructions

Post by Hillbilly »

OSOK... dont despair. In my opinion, no one is alive who can produce a techinical drawing or manual that can be understood by mere humans.

This situation had become worse in the last 30 years or so. I can build a house from scratch... but struggled with a wooden swingset. It went better after I tossed the book .....

Besides, we all know that instructions are "just another guy's opinion".
