Dern snow
We got dumped on lately have about 16 inches on the ground and snowing, getting real hard to deal with it as i can`t do much so Norma has to do most of the shoveling.
The old JD won`t start of coarse and gonna be 20 plus below tonight, the roofs need shoveling and gotta get the 200 yard drive cleared because UPS is coming tomorrow with a couple WW2 field phones i`m looking forward to getting.
Lord be with us.

Re: Dern snow
Wish I was closer Lenn- I love to plow snow. Nothing worse that having to shovel the roofs off.
BROWN LABS MATTER !!
Re: Dern snow
Thanks pards, we have our son who has a plow truck but he works long hours but he is going to plow the drive late tonight .
I think we need to move south and get away from all this stuff though i love the snow, i remember all the snowshoe walks with Snoopy on a sled up in the woods and a fire going now can`t do any of it.
Trying not to wine others have it worse but i`m tiring of it all.

Sorry for your troubles Lenn.
Hasn't been too bad here. We get it little bits at a time this year seems like. Cleanup hasn't been too bad. We don't have a whole lot......yet.

Sorry to hear that you are getting snowed in, don't happen here but where I used to live we had to keep a good stock of grub and other essentials just in case.

Re: Dern snow
I love the snow - but understand the problems it brings when one reaches a "certain stage of life". Shucks, my father-in-law doesn't have to deal with snow, but is facing the same lack of mobility and such. Moving to a warmer clime is definitely one option, but in the meantime, I pray you get the roof and driveway taken care of soon with no further issues cropping up.

In western Washington we had a little snow starting Christmas (I loved it...we don't get a white Christmas but once in a blue moon)
To me, it wasn't much more than a hard frost, but the idiots around here go nuts everytime it snows.....

Re: Dern snow
Lenn, I wish I was your neighbor, I'd come over and drink your whiskey till we had the JD ALL figured out! I was a pipeliner in New England one winter, we could never start any equipment at those temps without a good healthy snort of ether and a good warm battery. Good luck and keep the Faith.
Re: Dern snow
I'd help too if I was closer to Lenn.
Then again, the "JD" I'd focus on would be black -- and not green & yellow.
Wishing you well Pitchy! Prayers going your way -- air mail.

Lenn,
I too, wish I were much closer to help you out a bit.
I would drive my tractor over and plow you out. The old IH766 is a pretty good old gal. I set the timer 1 - 1 1/2 hrs ahead of plowing so she'll start somewhat warm. Much easier on the diesel.
I threw a chain last week while plowing. First time that's ever happened, apparently the inside "chain clasp" came undone. Wrestled it back on Christmas Day while my son was available to help.

Re: Dern snow
Hey thanks guys it feels good to see all the volunteers i know you would if you could.
The Battery is pretty old that`s the biggest problem, used to be if it turned over it would fire off, heck it used to start at twenty below but with a weak spark it will flood then your done.
It will have to sit there until it warms up and i`ll pick up a new battery then it will go, it has straight 30 weight oil in it so it turns over pretty hard also.
I have in the past got the nipco out and warmed it up for a while, i`m going to let it go for now it`s just to hard.
Now if UPS makes it here with those field phones today and they work that will be a good thing.
Cheers and thanks.

Re: Dern snow
My tractor mechanic recommended switching from straight 30W to 5 or 10 - 40 quite awhile back.
Yep, in the north country weak batteries in anything don't contribute to reliable starts.
I also use Heet brand winter diesel treatment in my fuel......or at least until my 1 or 2 containers last. I can't seem to find it anywhere this year.

Yep, as a mechanic i fail on getting ready for sure.
-20 right now, stepped out and took a few pictures of the purdy stuff.
The snow on the roofs is new snow last night we had the roofs shoveled off yesterday.
The kid came over and plowed some of the drive last night.

b.t.w., we have kin and kith in michigan, minnesota and wisconsin who had planned to retire to the deep south to escape the snow but in the end they could not abide breathing the syrupy air. Odd thing is, when we'd have a warm, sunny 50-60 degree in the fahrenheit winter day, they'd all be wearing windbreakers over sweaters. They claimed it was a different chilly sensation than the same temperature way up there. They also said we did not heat our homes sufficiently. So we briefly gave them charge of the thermostat and the rosin began dripping and running out of the knotty pine ceiling and wall paneling.....kid you not. Until we re-fought the battle of first manassas and took back the thermostat, I spent all my time outside or in a room with a window open. They wore union suits and fuzzy slippers if the room was less than 80.

I am seeing -8 down here. The problem is we got dumped on and then it all melted. Now we only have 4 or 5 inches on the ground and the ... individuals who put in septic systems and those who keep an eye on them decided it was OK to depend on there being snow. I expect we will see a bunch of septic lines freeze this week. I put up a pallet and cattle panel shed just before the big snow and realized too late it needed center beam. Last weekend I went out and shored it up and put an end on. I figure the frost was down a 12-18 inches based on the fence post driving but it will gain an inch or 2 a day with it this cold. I have the woodstove up to 500 degrees and I think it may be time to get the toboggan tuned up for a trip up to the BWCA after some lake trout.

We put a thick layer of leaves covered with tarps over our sewer every year to keep it from freezing, if we get lots of snow that helps keeping the frost from going down to deep but when it gets down to -30 like today ya never know our drain field frooze up last year.Birchsmoke wrote: ↑Sat Jan 01, 2022 7:35 am I am seeing -8 down here. Re: Dern snow
Well... the roof is made out of 16ft cattle panels and a tarp so I just popped them back up and put in a center support. The wife's green house is a pallet on the North wall and then down all the way to the ground on the South so its steeper and stouter. Perhaps the 12 ft span was a bit much but I have a 30 x12 shed for about $200.
What I did on the septic was put in a second float and if the fluid rises above the first float the second float switch activates and that is connected to a roof heater that I pulled down the 100ft septic line to the field and sealed with marine epoxy. The Septic alarm has not gone of since although the original installer is still banned from the property.

Just South of Hastings.
-17 this morning. Wood stove is at 500 degrees. I put on the ECWS top and bottom and my new Air Farce muklus and took the dog for a walk. Got a little sweaty. Had a meeting last night and some people said they would not come because it was -9 but all the girls from the bell choir, old and young, were there practicing and didn't seem to mind the cold. Really... I don't like working on machinery so much in the cold but other than that its no big deal.

Hey Lenn, how's that old furnace holding up? I know that was a concern for you.
Wish I had more wood on the porch. Son Ford has a big red oak log dragged up by the splitter so he can take care of it.
