OT: If I buy a Remington Tactical rifle which one?

I am considering buying a 223 tactical rifle. I believe I will pick up a Remington but I find there are three in the price range I would consider. The LTR, SPS, and the new VTR. I don't have much use for a 223 but I figure everyone should have one and I have a ton of ammo acquired over the years which I haven't shot because the accuracy of my Mini 14 doesn't thrill me. I am heading over to Frontsight next month for the 4 day Practical rifle course and they are advising a back-up rifle. Unfortunately, while I have a handful of suitable rifles, I am taking my Vanguard sub MOA 243, none are of the same cartridge so I will end having to buy 500 rounds of ammo for my back-up gun which will cost me almost as much as buying one of the above rifles. Any thoughts on which would be the better choice of the three?

My vote goes to the Remington LTR. But I bought the 308 Winchester.
Great little rifle. Very accurate and a joy to shot.

The 223 Remington LTR has 1/9" drall for heavier bullets. Hope this helps to make a decision. I think you can't go wrong with any of the Remington rifles!

I can't help you with the gun choice, but I have been reading Frontsight's free gun training tips and they are very informative. The school looks top-notch from what I have seen/read on their site.

You should let us know how it is when you get back. That is ,if this is your first trip, otherwise please spill the beans now.

Take a good look at the Savage model 12 heavy barrel bolt action with accutrigger:

The scope is a Tasco 10-40x, which I am supposed to be ashamed of (it isn't a Leupold, and it cost less than $200), and is "over-powered" because all the experts say 4x is good enough and maybe 6x for long range. Problem is I can't see those little one-inch target squares without 40x, and I guess I'm a freak, but I can stand and use it on 10x to shoot 6" disks at 100 yards, even though the magnified "wobble" is distracting.

It has to be as accurate as anything else on the market (if you are so good that you can "shoot the difference" between it and a tricked out Rem 700 or Win 70 or whatever, you are such a good shot that you'd ALREADY own several .223's and not even have to ask about them!).

Anyway, I have the setup above, and really like it. It could literally drive tacks at 100 yards. I'm good enough that I can tell when I'm using good ammo or handloads vs. factory with that gun, but I'm sure a REALLY good shooter could get 0.25"@100yd with it. I get 0.75" just because I'm not that good I think.

SniperCentral.com did a test on the new VTR and found out it wasn't as accurate as the LTR or SPS tactical.

Thanks, the LTR was the way I was leaning as it seems to have better stock, bedding and free floating barrel. I read the reviews on the sniper**.com website and while the VTR did not seem quite as good Sub-moa was possible out of the box and the barrel shape and " muzzle brake" are a bit different just like me.

Front Sight. I took advantage of the GOA lifetime membership and two day Front Sight training package which I upgraded to 4 day Practical rifle for $500. I would have preferred Gunsite as they have courses more geared towards hunting, and being associated with Col Cooper has appeal but I can stay for free at my sisters place in Vegas and I am saving a $1000 on 4 days worth of training.

If you are going to keep it as is out of the box, I'd go with the LTR, as you say it has a better stock, etc.
I've got an LTR in 308 that I'm very happy with.

I have a 20" heavy barrelled Savage in .223 that's pretty good too. It was marketed as the "4x4" or "truck gun". If still available, it would probably cost about 1/2 or less than the LTR.

Thanks Fred. This gun is a keeper! No problem to get great groups with anything I load. Only one exeption; my LTR does not like 150grs. bullets. I tried Sierra 150grs. Spitzer BT, Nosler Ballistic Tip, Hornady 150grs. Spire Point and Speer Grand Slam but nothing worked. Tested all 150grs. bullets with different powders but same results more like pattering than groups. With Sierra 125grs. Spitzer I got groups as with all the 168grs. HPBT match stuff. The Sierra 190grs. HPBT match worked too!
