357 Mag deer hunting
Hi I’m new the the sight but I’ve been around lever guns must my life. I’ve always used a 30-30 or a 30-06, but I’ve got a hankering for my favorite. A 1873 Winchester with a 24 inch barrel in 357 magnum, is what I’m planing on taking hunting. Due to the shortage of reloading supplies I have limited equipment.
The powders I have are titegroup, bullseye, universal, and blue dot.
I’ve got a lot of bullets and decent primers but between the powers I have what is the best for a rifle and any suggested loadings.

You can also check Hodgenreloading.com for load date. Any true 357 mag load is capable of killing deer sized game as long as you use a quality projectile and put it in the boiler room.

Choose your heaviest flat point bullet. Don’t use hollow point pistol bullets at rifle velocities.

Years ago my hunting partner used a .357 Marlin and 140 gr. factory loads. It worked fine on every deer I saw him shoot. These were Whitetails in Missouri .. decent size deer.

Re: 357 Mag deer hunting
I've heard this advice before. It is probably very good advice.
However, it has not kept me from shooting a 158 gr or 180 gr Hornady XTP bullet at rifle velocities and I have never lost a deer with either bullet.

Re: 357 Mag deer hunting
I talked to Hornady years ago about the XTPs. The lady told me the 158s were good to 2000 fps and the 180s to 2400.Scott Tschirhart wrote: ↑Mon Nov 29, 2021 10:37 amI've heard this advice before. It is probably very good advice.

I still have unopened boxes of both. I keep casting the LBT LWFN 180s….

Re: 357 Mag deer hunting
I’ve shot over fifty deer with just the revolver in 357mag over the last forty+ years. Most were shot with Hornady XTP 158 and 180 bullets. I have never lost one deer with that cartridge. My only lost handgun deer was with a 44mag…..simply made a bad shot. If you put the bullet in he right spot you’ll get the deer. FWIW, I used the same bullets in three different 357MAX rifles and they worked fine until I pushed them well over 2200 fps.

Re: 357 Mag deer hunting
That makes sense. I shoot the 158s at about 1700 or so in a rifle. No danger there.

I use a 158 grain jsp. It works like magic. Deer drop like they were hot by lightning.

My son has killed a passel of deer using a Marlin 1894 in 357 mag with handloaded xtps (pushed by Lil Gun).

Re: 357 Mag deer hunting
Back when I hot rodded my .357s, a 140 grain JHP bullet at 2200 fps took a deer for my wife from my 1892 .357 rifle with 20 inch barrel. Blew a 6 inch hole on the off side.

One thing I’m slightly concerned about is getting to hit of a round in the 1873 because I’ve heard they have problems

Re: 357 Mag deer hunting
I have four model 1873s right now but they are all in 44 WCF. Two Uberti's and an original Winchester SRC and a Miroku SRC. I still shoot mostly ffg Goex in them but I have one load of H-110 and the XTP bullet that I won't disclose. All this to say that I have great confidence in the 73 but the toggle links are still not nearly as strong as the double locking lugs of the 92. If I were going to use the .357, I'd use a 92. Had one many years ago and shot mostly 38 specials in it even for deer. It's barrel was an original 32 WCF that had been rebored so the barrel was not of a steel that is as tough as modern 4140 so I took it a little easy on it. You don't need to hot rod the 73 to kill white tail but you do need to limit your range.
Here is what the 73 and black powder can do.
If you look real close, you'll notice there is a tang sight on this SRC from 1896.

Re: 357 Mag deer hunting
yeah, I was wondering about full power 357 loads in an 1873 rifle.
also, about the xtps. I use 300 grain .452 XTPs in my cva optima muzzle loader rifle over 90 grains (measured not weighed) of blackhorn powder. I chrony'd it at 1750 I think and it hits deer like the hammer of thor. I know this is a different caliber, etc. but just a testament to xtps at rifle velocities.
