New to me .45-70s, sort of a range report and questions...

Before anyone asks:

No pics at this time due to my scheduling so for the time being I'm gonna whistle Dixie... :P

A couple of months ago I picked up a new 1895CB and last Saturday I stumbled upon a gently used H&R Buffalo Classic. Last Sunday I finally got a chance to get to the range.

I had one box each of Remington 325 grainers and GOEX Black Dawge 405 grainers. I used the Remingtons in the Marlin and the GOEX in the Buff since it's easier to clean.

Recoil in both was STOUT but that's probably since these are the largest calibers I've ever fired outside of the 40mm M203. The GOEX was certainly more FUN though with that BOOM! and smoke rolling downrange.

Marlin 1895CB:
Over open sights I kept 3 rounds at a time in about 1" at 25yds. At 100yds it went to 3-4" BUT that's as much a function of the loose trigger nut as anything else. I need a scope or peep sight to get the best out of anything anymore due to my eyes.

Buffalo Classic:
Shots were all over the place at 25 and at 100 only 1 out of 8-10 hit paper. Realized later the rear sight was loose.

Overall I am pleased with both and hope to get some rounds made up to see what the rifles and I can do together.

Questions:
The Buff only came with one insert, the one pictured at 3 o'clock here:

As I understand it, these use a Lyman 17A, right? If so, I just need to order the 17A insert set, correct?

I had one round of the GOEX that would not fire from the H&R, even after repeated strikes (5 or so). Put it in the Marlin and it went just fine. The rounds before and after fired just fine from the H&R. :?

For the Marlin I picked up the Cabela's jute sling rangerider7 used in this thread: viewtopic.php?t=1729&highlight=cabelas+sling

How do I shorten it? It reaches from the butt to the front sight and moves around. I can carry OK with it but if I try to use the sling as a shooting aid it's WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too long and slides back to the receiver making it even worse. Ideas or suggestions?

Thanks!:D

That will mess up a group!

Good report.

Oh, I wish I was in the land of cotton,
Old times there are not forgotten,
Look away, look away... look away, Dixie Land.

In Dixie Land - where I was born in,
early on, one frosty mornin',
Look away, look away....... look away, Dixie Land.

I wish I was in Dixie, Hoorah! Hoorah!
In Dixie Land I’ll take my stand,
to live and die in Dixie.
Away........ away...... away down south in Dixie.
Away........ away...... away down south in Dixie.

I'dove to help you, but don't have any experience with either.

But, with open sights and a new rifle, I'd say those are pretty good groups at 100yds with the 45-70.
...and I don't think he even knows it...Walks around with a half-assed grin...If he feels fear, he don't show it. Just rides into hell and back again.

I'd recommend one of the "bull" style front sight inserts if it is a Lyman 17A. And, tightening up that rear sight, as 20cows said, that alone will really mess up a group.

As for the sling, I'm not familiar enough with them to advise.

Thanks, I'll order that insert set then since it looks like the correct one.

I've wondered if soaking the sling in water might draw it up? :?
