Best Hunting Rifle thread got me think in’...”How many Leverguns...?”
.
How many LEVERGUNS would it take to cover all the hunting needs you would want to cover...???
Actually I mean “how few could you do it well with...?”
I think for me four would do it and I have three of them.
A 22 LR - probably my Ruger 96/22
A 32-20 - my Marlin 1894
A 500 S&W - my BHA 89
A Henry Long Range or BLR or Savage 99 in 308 or 243 or even 7mm Mag
I might swap a 357 Mag or even 44 Mag or 45 Colt for the 32-20, or beg for a five-levergun solution, but you can load the 500 S&W down to cat-sneeze levels and from what I’ve read still get good accuracy, much like the 375 H&H and 375 Ruger.

My Henry .22 , Marlin 32-20 , Marlin 45-70 , Marlin .338 Express. North America covered. If I need to kill something extra big then the 86/71.
Re: Best Hunting Rifle thread got me think in’...”How many Leverguns...?”
Marlin 39 .22
Marlin Guide gun 45/70
Savage 99 308
i could substitute ruger 22 auto for the marlin, but'cept there's no lever.

Re: Best Hunting Rifle thread got me think in’...”How many Leverguns...?”
I THINK I could do it with three that I already own (BUT AIN'T GONNA!). Henry 22 carbine with and without a suppressor, Savage 99 in 308, and my custom Marlin 1895 in 45-70 (takedown, with and without suppressor, shotshells made with 45-90 brass, 550 grain subsonic, and 300 grain XTP snotknockers make it versitle). But I don't even like to think about such things.

I could make do with a 25-35 Winchester 94 SRC and a Model 71.
Re: Best Hunting Rifle thread got me think in’...”How many Leverguns...?”
Probably three
Marlin 39A
Marlin 357 mag.
Marlin 356 Win.

Marlin 356 Win.
Re: Best Hunting Rifle thread got me think in’...”How many Leverguns...?”
I could cover most things in my area with a Henry .22 caliber and a .30-30 Marlin or Winchester. Do I want more? Yes! Can I find uses for more? Absolutely!

Absolute minimum would be two Marlins, 39 and 1895 GS. And two 99's in 22-250 and 30-06. I have the Marlins but have never really been enamored of the Savage 99. But it's the only lever gun offered in a descent varmit round or my go to caliber 30-06.

My old 94 SRC in .30-30 would be easy to live with. A new favorite is a Cimarron 1873 in .44 Special. I haven't even shot my Browning 95 in .30-40 Krag.
To tell the truth, I could be fine with any one of these.

How about the BLR...??
The Henry Long Ranger is made in USA, but in 308 not 30-06 I see...https://www.henryusa.com/rifles/the-long-ranger/

Re: Best Hunting Rifle thread got me think in’...”How many Leverguns...?”
Its really hard to not put a BLR into the mix here. The newer aluminum framed ones are so light because the bolt locks into the steel barrel, not the aluminum receiver. A Model '88 Win should not be excluded here either as very strong action. I see on the other thread, bolt actions are very popular. I can see why. Strong and light. I prefer a levergun for its "ambidextrous" nature. If its within only 100 yards, darn near anything would do! I don't lightly load my rifles. When I want more power, I grab the next rifle up in power. No "cat sneeze" rifles here or pistols or revolvers. I just pick the next bigger one up in cartridge power. -Tutt

I like your choices. Mine are similar Model 39A 22. Savage 99 in 308, Browning BLR in 358 winchester. I must admit I would love to add a Savage 99 in 250-3000 to complete my needs.

If you don't like the 99 then get a BLR. They even made a few in .223 an excellent varmint rifle.
I prefer the Rossi pump 22.
then the 73 SRC in 44-40.
next the BLR in 308.
Big stuff would take the 45-90 Win 1886.

Re: Best Hunting Rifle thread got me think in’...”How many Leverguns...?”
I only have two and either can do what the other can.
If for some reason I decided to go all lever action for everything:
A 22lr I like most anyone's except the mossberg. The Henry seems the easiest to obtain right now. Would hurt to give up my 77/22 though.
A box fed 308. I like about all I've seen but might go for the Henry. Substituting 284, 7mm-08, 300 Savage, 358, a short mag, etc would be okay too. Would consider a tube fed 307 or 356 win or 300 or 338 Marlin if I can get brass and dies. I think I would miss my bolts though. Not so much the semis.
Throw a 44 mag in there too. Depending how I load it it can backup either of the other two in a pinch. The revolver caliber lever guns can't be beat for versatility. Plinking, hunting, defense in a handy package . I like both the Marlin and Winchester patterns. The Ruger is a slick hunter too but a little less versatile to me. My 44 is a Marlin My 45 is a Rossi. Other calibers from 357 to 480 would be okay too. I prefer 44mag and special for versatility and availability
The shotgun part is hard for me. I suppose I might have to go for a 1887 having never been a 410 fan. I would really much prefer another type of action. I like pumps and doubles and also have semis and singles. If someone made something like a 1886 or 1894 scaled up to 20 gauge I might change my mind.
Of course we aren't talking about handgun substitutes

I only have two types of rifle on hand, a Ruger 96/22LR and my 2 Rossi 357's. I have to admit I would love just one novelty big gun like a 480 ruger or 500S&W though.

Re: Best Hunting Rifle thread got me think in’...”How many Leverguns...?”
I have proof hanging on my wall that the .480 Ruger is a capable caliber in a levergun. Skull of a water buffalo/cape buffalo hybrid taken with it. That caliber is not really a need, but it is a great addition to the .30-30 for those times when you want to put a 400 to 410 grain bullet through 2.5 to 3 feet of extra tough animal. 325 grain jhp is more the standard with it, but I have a few 410 grain LBT style Wide Flat Nose Cast Performance Bullets left for it that have a near max load of H110 in Starline brass. That load has knocked over a few wild pigs with some impressive authority. I have not recovered one of those bullets from a pig yet. Yes, it is a Rossi. So far, not a single malfunction or any type of issue. OK, it only has about three thousand rounds through it.

Pillar, that 480 Rossi is worth gold anymore, like 2K! you take care of it! As to the Doc's idea, 3-4 leverguns could handle any situation and probably as few as two IMHO. -Tutt

Leverguns? As far as I'm concerned a pump action does better...faster with a seemingly tighter lock up....the powers at the Cowboy matches used to say that Colt Lightnings I was using should be banned. Never was beat at the plate shooting where one guys starts from the left and the other guy starts from the right and the one who shoots the odd numbered plate in the middle wins....
Model 61..... 62..... 1890 Winchester
Model 25 Remington..... Remington 14 and 1/2.....Colt Lightning in...... 25-20 or 32-20 or 38-40 or 44-40...according to gun chosen.
Model 141 Remington in 35 with seconds going to the older corn cob 760
All quality guns machined from solid blocks of steel...they run and run and don't need Steve to work on em so you don't have to paint them white.....

I don't know that is to be contributed to the rifle. I would say the shooter made the difference.Sixgun wrote: ↑Thu Jun 03, 2021 3:10 pm Leverguns? In several matches I beat a Conservation Agent (what we used to call a Game Warden) and another guy who were shooting Glock 9mm. I was using my 7 1/2 Ruger Blackhawk .45 Colt. From the holster at the beeper ... and beat both several times.

Cant agree with sixgun here. if lightings were faster/better they would taken over cowboy shooting matches by now.
As to not needing Steve to work on them, LOL. The lightnings are the finnickiest type of firearm out there. Run a search on the wire or anywhere else " How do I get my lightning to run well? " My lightning fails before I can do a whole stage. " I finally got my lightning feeding like goose snot but I bring two to every meet just in case", great guns if you get them running well, but a lot finickier than a 92 even with bottlneck cases.

LMAO! Didn't say you SHOULD only own 2 leverguns, but you could easily get by with a Henry Long Ranger in 308 Win for the long range/middle weight game and a 45-70 levergun for the big stuff. Six, I have a deluxe Pedersoli Lightning in 45 Colt that came with a defective barrel. I still need to get it repaired. -Tutt

Re: Best Hunting Rifle thread got me think in’...”How many Leverguns...?”
Thank you Master Jim....but I'll will admit, on a public forum that I am NOTHING compared to the top shooters....I'll hold my own and place or win the local matches but when I attend the Regionals and Pa. State champs, I usually finish on the plus side of the middle of the pack, sometimes the bottom third...in my class AAA ....I do have a half dozen 1st places out of dozens of matches in the but I attribute those to just having a good day. The Master class shooters are just phenomenal, the B class guys ought to take up knitting.JimT wrote: ↑Thu Jun 03, 2021 3:25 pm I don't know that is to be contributed to the rifle. I've been known to honestly cheat, if that makes sense....at one Cowboy match they had a scenario where it was just 10 rifle shots, no handgun or shotgun.......the target was a piece of steel the size of a barn....I won that out of well over a hundred shooters....and this match was an east coast championship......YOU know this but most people don't.....you hold the trigger back on a COLT Lightning and let em rip, "semi auto style".
It's been said many times that it is the shooter on who wins but that only counts in good shooter vs.bad....with the top of the class shooters it's the gun. They gave Rob Leatham a stock 1911 and his tricked out 1911....the final time score was differentiated in milliseconds.

Young man, let me edumacate you.... ......when I say "LIGHTNING", I mean COLT Lightning......not that foreign junk which are pretty much like reproductions of the 1876 Winchester or any other Winchester that foreign companies put out. I've been shooting Colt Lightnings for over 40 years. The Colt Lightning rifle is another whole world apart from the Colt Lightning revolver. The rifles are top notch guns with plenty of craftsmanship and durability put into them.mickbr wrote: ↑Thu Jun 03, 2021 4:51 pm Cant agree with sixgun here. if lightings were faster/better they would taken over cowboy shooting matches by now.

I mean no disrespect or to condescend your statement.....I'm just speaking the truth and letting you know how the old guns ran....in other words, real world experience.
In the picture below, on the far right are 3 Colt Lightnings ....a 38-40 with a set trigger..(1888), a 44-40 first months production (1884?) serial number 58 and a first model 32-20 built in 1887,,,,the first and the last have a combined log count of around 7,000 rds and who knows how much they were shot before I got my grubby hands on em. I leave serial number 58 sitting around as a safe queen with only rare shootfests.
While I'm sure there was, I can't honestly remember any hang ups due to the rifle and I'd say 60% of my shooting was fast.
You guys here get me wrong and think I'm a big mouth know it all.....well, I am. I know the difference between quality, durability, craftsmanship, and accuracy and it's because of big mouth complaining people like me that make the manufacturers of reproduction guns strive better to produce a gun that the average guy can buy without needing the services of Steve....there's no reason at all for any gun to have issues when all they are doing is REPRODUCING a proven design all the time using CNC machinery when the old manufactures did it on leather strap driven machines that were powered by STEAM.
The Japs got it right..their guns are top notch and are stronger than the originals but lack the craftsmanship......

Oh Lordy....WHY o WHY did I dispute the master?
Your right Jim.....watching the guy leaves me breathless.....I read somewhere he shoots thousands of rounds weekly....he gets up, eats....shoots till lunch....shoots till dinner....eats and loads ammo till bedtime....if...if...he sleeps. He probably just squits some Ezzox on on his fingers and other joints and goes back to shooting......

Charlie Askins held the pistol championship for 5 years I believe it was. He said shooting thousands and thousands of pistol rounds a year at bullseyes for 5 years drove him to shooting rifles. I could see that happening.

I've read that Jordan was the same way......thousands of wax bullets......it's the RARE man that has that much drive. Ya figure, shoot..shoot...shoot....shoot.....eat....shoot...shoot....and we all wind up in the same place. I like a little diversity.....

.
Several of you get by with leverguns in two chamberings, and I was thinking I suppose a 32-20 can cat-sneeze and emulate a 22LR, just like a 500 S&W or 480 Ruger (or one of the long-action rounds like a 45-70 or 444 Marlin) can cat-sneeze down to 44 Special type impact. I’m sure the old-timers made do lots of ways, especially when you loaded by dumping in black powder and maybe supplies were low or they needed to use the bear-gun but squirrels or rabbits were the only game.

Sixgun, cant disagree about general quality and well the jap guns arent perfect either. They put more QC into their bolt actions and shotguns than for a 94 or 92. Same as the italians. That country is capable of the finest running shotguns from SXS to S/A, yet with leverguns its like the engineers throw darts at a dart board to choose the bore diametre and quality level. I wonder if its because the market is driven a lot by the cowboy shooting crowd now who dont need accuracy and also customize their guns so manufacturers get away with sloppier starting product. Its why I dont mind Rossi, cheaper start and while some 'need' work and some of us 'like' smoother you get their earlier than win/miroku price.Sixgun wrote: ↑Thu Jun 03, 2021 6:36 pmYoung man, let me edumacate you.... ......when I say "LIGHTNING", I mean COLT Lightning......not that foreign junk which are pretty much like reproductions of the 1876 Winchester or any other Winchester that foreign companies put out.
As to not needing Steve to work on them, LOL. The lightnings are the finnickiest type of firearm out there. Run a search on the wire or anywhere else " How do I get my lightning to run well? " My lightning fails before I can do a whole stage.

I only have 2, Marlin 336 and Win 64a, both in 30-30, and at my age and ?health, breathing very bad, they'll easily cover all my hunting days left! I am on the lookout for a 38-55, and very much wish my Marlin was in 35Rem. Since I got the Winchester. I hardly ever use the Marlin. Everything about the 64 lends itself to being a hunting rifle!
If I was 20 years younger now. I'd look for a Mod 71, and a Savage 99 in 300Savage, along with an older 94 in 38-55. I'd like the BB 375 too i think.
I never did any searching for rifles, just always settled for what come along. Now that I'm retired, I need to get to some gunshots, and so forth! But I will say the truth for me is the 64a is as pleasing a rifle as I could ever expect to find. I did love the Marlin but now when I pick it up, it just feels like a Milatary BAR, and its not just the weight. The 64 shoulders, packs, and fits me like a good 22 squirrel rifle and thats something!

Around "my" parts?...the PNW, I'd keep the 1951 94, and the newer 94 SRC.....those 170 softpoints can handle about anything.

I have to agree with you about that. After handling an old 64, modern rifles just feel clunky in my hands. The sights on that 64 just jump to the eye when I shoulder that rifle. I just wish I could get the old yellow box 170 gr Winchester Silvertip ammunition.Drawdown wrote: ↑Sat Jun 05, 2021 11:28 am I only have 2, Marlin 336 and Win 64a, both in 30-30, and at my age and ?health, breathing very bad, they'll easily cover all my hunting days left! I'm gonna be hunting with my reloads in it, 170gr Hawk FN, and at an avg velocity of 2218fps, I believe they'll get the job done. Win sure did well letting Whelen design the stocks for the 71 and 64, at least its my understanding they're by his design?

The .30-30 would do it for me...
So what if I have 30 of them? If I average it out, I got one for every day of the month! And the fact that they're all a version of the mdl 94 is superfluous!

Re: Best Hunting Rifle thread got me think in’...”How many Leverguns...?”
The older rifles feel more solid because the wood was denser and the metal parts were fitted. As time went on and machinery got better, it was cheaper for the manufacturers to make parts and use them as is with minimal fitting...looser tolerances.....the old way was to make the part bigger than needed and file/fit them with closer tolerances which results in less wiggle and a tighter feel.
I've got some old guns from the pre war (ww1) period that are pretty much as new....and very sticky.
Walnut in the old days was first growth from the north......as that ran out walnut was procured from more southern areas where the wood grows faster=less dense.
I believe Rossi can make a much better gun if they wanted to. Manufacturers today have loosened (higher) up the percentage of customer returns. They figure if 10 percent come back with a total sale of (making this number up) a million guns beats a 3 percent return with a half million guns sold......typical corporate thinking.
Would you buy a pick up truck if 10 percent of the steering wheels fell off but you could save $10,000 on the total price?
Wouldn't you rather pay a hundred dollars more for a rifle/handgun that was headache free?
Forgot how many old Winchesters and Colts that I've bought that looked like they were drug behind a horse on a rocky road....they looked like heck....but they ran......what's the old Latin saying!
The ONLY THING IM TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH IS TO GIVE THE UNKNOWLEDGABLE GUY A FEEL GOOD FEELING WHEN HE BUYS A GUN. ITS AGGRAVATING AS HELL WHEN YOU PLUNK DOWN $4-800 AND NEED TO HAVE IT WORKED ON.
SORRY FOR YELLING.
These things don't bother me as there's not a Winchester lever gun ever made that I can't rip apart and put back together blindfolded. I'm calling Rossi's JUNK because there is a real world problem...and they can fix it if they want to.

Man, forgot the 375 Win which is actually also a 38-55 long and short.
Re: Best Hunting Rifle thread got me think in’...”How many Leverguns...?”
Yep.I could cover most things in my area with a Henry .22 caliber and a .30-30 Marlin or Winchester. Do I want more? Yes! Can I find uses for more? Absolutely!
