Sorta OT - CAS match

Post by Griff »

Since this is a photo driven site, I figured I post here.

There's been a long dry spell when I didn't really compete except in the ocassional monthly match. Well, this past Sat & Sun our club held our 17th annual match. Seems I was the only brave soul to hazard the pitfalls of the "Frontiersman" category which requires two C&B revolvers. I had several very poor stages, and they knocked my overall standing down dramatically, but... I perserved thru each and every stage, taking my lumps as both lube-fouled powder and bad caps slowed me down, and on a couple of ocassions during the heat of the day on Sat, stopped me cold. Once leaving 3 shots unfired (my fault, I thought shot #2 was a squib), and the very next stage shot #1 was a squib. Eliminating the lube on Sunday was much better, got thru all four stages without a serious problem. But, maybe I need new nipples, a couple on each of my 3 1851 Navies appears a little shorter than the others, a few minutes with a dial caliper will tell the "tale of the tape".

But, unlike other reports, my Uberti 1873 Winchester clone in .45 Colt ran for all ten stages without a cleaning, and although fouled, and toward the end of the second day, the lifter was getting a little sticky, I only had two misses, both the result of overswinging on a target. My bullet of choice for the past 20 years has been cast of WW in an RCBS mold # .45-225-CAV. Shown here "as cast" and as hit with my 2-½ lb. rounding hammer to see how it holds together on impact:

and here, on the right, as loaded:

This is a truncated cone, with a wide fairly deep lube groove. For my BP loads, I lube it with SPG and size to .452. I only use about 28grs of Goex Cartridge topped with a card punched from a waxed paper milk carton. Fired with a WLR Winchester primer, I've never had a problem, even with ammo stored for several years. The bullet has a good, healthy crimp groove, and with a tight case provides a good seal from the elements.

While I was the only C&B shooter, I wasn't without a cheering section. Seems everyone enjoyed a good run when I got one. On several occasions it seemed I had a bad cap, and after running around the cylinder for another strike or two, I finally gave up, popped off the offending cap and fired again. Never failed to fire after getting a fresh cap.

So, after a 14 year absence, I added the 2008 "Frontiersman" win to wins in '90, '91 & '93 @ Raton with the Old West Shootists Assoc, a couple of 5th places & one 3rd place BP finishes @ EOT in '87, '88 & '91, and two 2nd place finishes @ Roundup in '92 & '94.

Griff,

That sounds like you had a bunch of fun in spite of the few problems.

I like the looks of that bullet. Does anyone cast that for sale, I'd like to try some.

Well congrats ol' bud,
And don't let anyone think that just because you were the only frontierman it came easy. I too compete as a frontiersman and I can tell you it aint about speed. The frontiersman that can coaks his equipment to the finish will be a winner.
Anyone can do it with catridge guns but cap&ball takes balls..............& caps.
Griff, you gotta get some Treso nipples for those guns. I shoot remmies and carry 10 spare cylinders, all with Treso's. Not only will it improve ignition but you can actually reduce the hammer spring more because stock CB's have heavy hammers to help control the caps blowing off. The treso's having smaller flash holes which also curb blowback so the hammer spring can be reduced some.
The other thing that helps is to use heavy grease, something like axle/5thwheel grease on the arbors. Oil is to easily blown away.

Thanks for the report Griff and congrats!

I think there is a SASS group around here somewhere and I might have to go see if they do anything.

Thanks guys. Yea, I think I need new nipples. I just mike'd the cylinders with nipples installed and the nipples themselves. The almost new (shot about 100 rounds), Signature Series, all measure rather uniformly @ 1.656" ±.003". Both the ASM and Colt 2nd Series measure a rather uneven 1.675" - 1.699". I believe that may be a bit of a stretch for proper ignition. The ASM and Colt had their nipples replaced with new last year. But, both have been shot quite a bit in the interim, and not being hardened, they have probably been shortened.

Nate, caps falling off ain't a problem with the Manhatten gates installed. In ten stages with 10 pistol shots per, I didn't have any caps get back into the action, even the ones that split enough to fall off were mostly dropped off as the cylinder rotated that nipple past the capping cut in the recoil shield.

I have two new Uberti cylinders for the '51s and will probably use these the next time out, till I get the Treso's delivered.

Good job, Griff.

I had a surprizingly good weekend myself. Shot a two day, eleven stage match and ended up the fastest duelist there. (they gave out three ribbons, musta been at least three of us ;) ) I was playing around with the '73 and Short stroked Marlin in C45S, alterating rifles each stage, and shooting anything from Slim's fantastic 155s to my 120 HB Barnstormers out of the Rugers.

Couldn't quite believe I glued enough of the match together to place first.

It shore feels good when it all works ;)

The Manhatten conversion doesn't work on the Remmies so it's not my main concern. Consistant ignition is. The stock nipples tend to wash out inthe flash holes. The Tresos are much better.

A gate is soldered into the hammer gap in the recoil shield to keep caps from falling back into the action:

Congratulations Griff! I can't say I understand most of the BP tech talk, but it sure sounds fun.

Bravo!

Glad to see you were able to make it to a shoot and to bring home a trophy to boot. Well, that's even better. I haven't been to one in years.

The cylinder on my Rogers & Spencer never bound up like my Remington did .. So I modified the Rem cylinder to be like the R&S..The collar deflects the fouling away from the axel pin.. I shoot a SAECO .452" 185gr bullet with the base sized .450" so as to seat squarely...seated directly on 24gr 3fg GOEX... Shoots clean & accurate too :D
