1895 question

Post by Rustolium »

Does anybody out there make a modern 1895 in different calibers and materials? I'd like one in .308 and SS. Probably just a dream, huh?

Yep, a dream. Get a Browning BLR.

Wal...................You can always shop around for one of the discontinued 1895's in .30-06 (or .270, if you can find one), and either use it as is, or rebore it to .35 Whelan, or rebarrel it.

Why .308? The action, and the lever throw are so long, that the .308 Winchester does not begin to achieve the potential of the action. Do you have a lot of this ammo you want to shoot?

I guess you could Loc-Tight a 7.62 NATO chamber adaptor in there, and have all the metal on the rifle hard chrome plated. Some of the hard chrome plating available today claim greater rust resistance than untreated stainless steel. I believe this. I have seen rusted stainless steel gun on the used sales racks of various gun shops.

When stainless steel finally does rust, it pits downward instead of outward. Thus the pitting is usually deep, even if it is only a small area.

Miroku was licensed to make 10,000 Winchester 95 rifles in 30-06 (3,000 in Hi Grade) in 1995 - That's how I got mine as a 25th anniversary gift from my wife three years ago - (OK, so I did locate it for her on GA - husbands gotta do all they can to help their wives).

Unfired, NIB, with manual. They are usually available still.

I'm wanting a .308, cause I have a gun for that already. I want more guns, just not more calibers. I reckon hard chrome plating could work too, just can't be shiney. I love the reduced maintenance of SS.

The Browning BLR, Stainless is what you want then. They actually make/made those.

And for less money, too. And within a few years the takedown will probably be available in SS.

You're only other choice is a Savage 99 that would have to be refinished since they only ever came blued.

For any blued rifle, there are several refinishing options...look at Wild West Guns who offer several different kind, including the above-mentioned hard chroming in a satin finish. (scroll to the bottom of the list)

Trust me - I ran that 95 through my FFL (came from a good dealer in Flint, Michigan) that runs my firing range (Dragon Arms) and, upon receiving it, I sprayed some bore cleaner down the barrel, ran a bore snake through it, and within the next hour, ran a a number of boxes of ammo through it - so the "unfired" status lasted only minutes after I became the official owner.

I shoot it at least every month - note the aftermarket sights I installed - and it shoots at least as good as it looks. The only "problem" I have with it is, my shooting gets interrupted frequently at the range by other shooters wanting to admire it - I can live with that!!

The unfired status was before it was mine!! I never intended to give the impression it remained unfired - all my guns are shooters - except the old black powder rifles and shotgun with the Damascus barrels I inherited from my grandfather and his brothers.

OJ.....I think the picture of you holding that 95 Win. on your front porch should be our site logo. You look like a kid at Christmas! I've always wished Ruger could pick up on the 1895 Win. design....made in USA of their famously strong steel. Yep, another dream.

That pic is way cool. I believe the BLR just doesn't have the soul of the 1895. I reckon I'll just have to settle and get one in '06.

Thanks for the kind words, guys - I feel honored just to be a member of this forum!

That pic was taken (by my wife - whose generosity got me the rifle) when I arrived home with the new (and broken in) Winchester 95 and I sure was at least as excited as any kid at Christmas ever was. When I got the phone call from the FFL involved that my rifle had arrived, I gave my driver's license number over the phone so they could start the paper work for the background check - and juped in my car and drove to the range - leaving my billfold and driver's license (and CCW permit) on my desk. Wife discovered that and prompltly drove out to the range (18 miles) to deliver those essentials to me so I would be driving and carrying legally.

Yep - at least as excited as any kid at Christmas ever was !!

The 95 is just a 336 Action. You could purchase a 30-30 version and have it rebored to .307 Winchester - very close and I understand that you can use .308 brass - but I'd suggest loading down a tad...

I'm having a .35 Rem rechambered to .356 Win right now by Nonneman Custom Rifles http://www.leveractions.com

Under $150 to have it done, but it does take a while - he's very busy.

Bogus,

He's thinking the Marlin 1895 or what is currently used with their 45/70's and 450 Marlin's, which is a scaled up 336, rather than the Win. 95. It took me seeing OJ's post to realize they were talking about the Winchesters as well.

Yeah, when I read 1895, I automatically think Marlin - thought that was a side bar...

Even though I have both Winchester and Marlin 95's....

The closest thing is indeed the 30-40 as it is a very close balistic match to the 308.

And the 30-06 is pretty much a ballistic twin to the 308.
