OT - How I spent my Memorial Day

Post by kimwcook »

I was assigned to work at the Moses Lake Dunes, one of two developed Off Road Vehicle (ORV) parks we have in Grant County, WA. The weather was everything but great for everyone. Wind blowing hard enough to just about sandblast, rain ranging from dribbles to down right down pour, cold and overcast as you can tell from the pic's.

I didn't have my camera out for much of it as I didn't want the ash (from Mt. St. Helens) and sand/dust in it. But yesterday I broke it out for a couple pic's.

A couple guys were jumping the county road as it winds through the dunes and they were grabbing some serious air. They were actually jumping completely over the county road.

One of the clubs set up a drag race area with light tree. This green jeep was serious quick.

Another guy jumping but this time it wasn't as high.

And finally a yahoo that wasn't paying attention to where he was driving. The pickup is actually front down in a pond. He can't go any farther forward or it'll turn into an anchor.

About four years ago the county passed an ordinance prohibiting alcohol. We were getting six to eight thousand people in the Moses Lake Dunes over Memorial weekend and it had turned into a Miami Spring Break type situation. Rapes, assaults, fatal accidents were common place and getting out of hand. Since the ban it's turned back into more or less a family affair again. The weather as stated was really crappy and after Saturday only the real die hards were left. That's why I didn't take any pic's of large groups.

We made it through without a fatal. We had only four reported accidents with one guy being extremely lucky to be alive. He was riding a quad and met a Bronco II head on. The Bronco dynamited it's brakes causing the front end to nose dive and it flipped over the top of the rider with the front end landing on top of him. Broke both arms and he's gonna be mighty sore. The other ones had a combination of broken collar bones, scapulas, arms or leg(s).

Beings I haven't been on patrol for nine years it's always an adventure getting back into a uniform. All in all it wasn't too bad. I at least got to ride a quad for a couple of days which I really miss riding.

Hope everyone else had a good Memorial Day.

Sounds like it decent time was had by all. Well, except for the guy with the broken arms... :?

I keep thinking of turning my VW into a Baja but I have nowhere to off-road it. Evrytime I settle on a hot rod style I want to build it in, I see a cool off Baja.
If these walls could talk, I'd listen to the floor.
