I found a Savage 99 at a local gun shop yesterday; the unusual thing about this one was the scope and mount. The rifle was very nice with original sights removed and blanked off.
The optics are a Bausch & Lomb fixed power scope with a Bausch & Lomb scope mount. The elevation and windage adjustments knobs are part of the scope mount. I have never seen anything like this before. I can not find any info about this configuration on the web. Can anyone help with this? Price was 599.00.
Savage 99 ??

External adjustable scopes were the only kind Bausch & Lomb made, before Bushnell bought them out.
They were all very versatile, expensive, high quality optics - in both fixed and variable powers.
The versatility part came after a scope was sighted-in.
In those early days, no other mount allowed scope removal/replacement with a return to exact zero - OR replacment with a second scope w/o re-sighting !
If one's not fixated on a 6-18x50 Infared range-finding type scope with integral digital camera, etc, the B&L's are a very satisfying scope.

Yup, the 4x was the Balfor, and the Balvar 8 variable was 2.5-8x.
There was also a Baltur 2.5X, and a Balvar 5, a 2.5-5X.
Here's the skinny on them:
