Marlin followed me home from gun show

Post by earlmck »

Last week end we had our first gun show around these parts in a long long time but it was worth it for us fellows who like the old ones. Almost no newer guns (Oregon is sitting on a 2- week background check time delay last I heard, which is a real wet blanket on selling new guns). But there were '73's '92s and a couple of Whitney-Kennedy's and a bunch of the old Sharps of all varieties and even an iron-frame Henry. I drooled heavily over a Sharps-Borchardt in 40-50 Sharps straight cal. but didn't want to explain to the boss about a new mortgage on the house...

However a middle-aged Marlin in 1894/38-40 persuasion followed me home.

Decent bore, quite a nice bit of "character" outside with a little gaposis in wood-to-metal fit that has developed. Middle-age spread?

All my previous Marlins are youngsters (1950 and newer) and are d&t'd on the side for receiver sights. This fellow is not d&t'd on the side but has these on the top of the receiver.

So what's supposed to go there?

Saw those on Win 94 30 WCFs, they're for top mount receiver sights. HTH

Very nice Marlin you picked up. Now you need to give us a range report on it. Hope you have lots of fun with the new old Marlin.

Earl the holes on top are for the Hepburn receiver sight! Those holes were added around 1903or 04 if I recall, and dropped by WWI. The sights are extremely hard to find, and expensive. They had a flip up peep, or notch, and were adjustable for elevation.
Skinner sells his version for $75, and has pictures on his site of the original also:

Wish I'd known there was a gun show close enough to drive to in Oregon! I'm so desperate I'd drive almost anywhere in the state for a gun show fix!

I get a warm feeling just looking at that Marlin.

Ya done good Earl.....a good gun is better than money in the bank.

Like Marlinman says, those two screws are factory and it's easy to mount a scope just by using those two holes without drilling more holes......just get a piece of rail and drill it...countersink it for the screw heads and your on your way for what old guys need to see what they are hitting.

I recently did this to an old '94 Marlin in 44-40....this is an honest 1 and 1/2" gun at 100 and not much bigger at 142 yards......has a very tight .425 groove diameter. ------006

Gorgeous Marlin, Earl, in a caliber I always wanted to fool with. Can't wait for your range report. Curious where the gun show was. None in these parts for more than a year, I am sad to say. I used to be happy to drive from Medford to the little show in Lakeview just for the neat stuff that was always there and the small-time dealers who attended.

Very nice. I can't help but think the CFO would think you made a wise investment.

Nice!
A good friend of mine has a 94 Marlin 15" Baby carbine and it too is drilled for a Hepburn sight. Kinda weird but they probably just drilled receivers as the made them.

My buddy has a 78 Sharp's Borchardt in 40-70 straight. It is a thing of beauty.

Very nice indeed. I need to hunt one down for a buddy for my 73. Is that a special order barrel length?

very nice find! I always thought -- and still think -- the .38-40 is a very underestimated and under-appreciated cartridge!

Let us know how it shoots.

I don't think the show was widely advertised, or maybe I just badly missed it. My friend George came by to drop off a couple books I'd loaned him and said "come to the guns show with me" which was the first I'd heard of it. It was over at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds in Redmond at one of the big buildings so there was plenty of room for the Wujan waltze. I thought you might have a table there Val! There were only a few tables with the old guns but they were fine tables: I felt privileged to get such a close look at some of those fine old weapons.

And much thanks for sight info and the Skinner link. Quite classy looking sight; got one on order!

That scope setup is really what the old eyes need Sixgun. Thanks for the idea on that. I'm hoping to use this baby in our silhouette game so need to use the irons as long as I can.

I might of at least attended the show earl, and maybe even have gotten a room and set up if table fees weren't too expensive. I'll have to do some more checking to see if I can find a resource that lists gun shows in Oregon, so maybe I can have a heads up before another one happens around Oregon.
