Congratulations! I grew up just north of Indianapolis. Granted, that was a while back, but back then I could walk half a mile to an open field and shoot to my heart's content. I haven't been back in about a decade, and I know it's grown a lot since then, but it is a pretty place to live. Good people, lots of common sense, nice weather (you get a little bit of everything), pro-gun (for the most part) and (especially compared to California) a lot cheaper to live in! :D

How is the area around there? Is it family friendly? I am bringing my wife and boys both are in elimentary school so would like to know what I am getting them in to.

JReed, Avon has been booming for the 13 years I've lived in Indiana. A lot of growth with the growing pains to go with it. I don't know what the population is now, but there is a lot of new housing and schools. It's lost most of it's small towness. There are plenty of places to shop and eat, but the congestion through town on the main route (US36) is terrible. I would suggest looking west of Avon, I don't know how much of a commute you want. You won't have to travel too far if you want small town or rural. I live in Putnam County, which is SW of Hendricks County where Avon is, there are good schools and breathing room, but of course I'm biased. I tend to avoid places and gatherings with more than 50 people if I can help it. Avon is a nice place, it just depends on what you want. People like it because it's close to Indy without the big city feel. Of course, in someways Indianapolis itself acts more like a big town than a city. Good luck and let us Hoosiers know if we can be any help.

One last point, I was born and raised in the Midwest but have lived in the San Fran area and the Chicago area, so I have a frame of reference to compare things to. I don't know where else you and your family have lived but Indy is a lot different from Cali, be prepared for some culture shock. Also get your paperwork in for your concealed carry permit, my little S&W that's in my pocket right now makes me feel warm and fuzzy.

+100. Get your DL, then apply for your Lifetime Permit before you do almost anything else.

You may only be here for 3 years, but it's the principle of the thing.

OI
What is DL are you talking drivers license?

Nemhed
My wife and I are both SoCal raised. We have been stationed at Camp Pendleton, 29Palms CA, and Huntsville Al. She is really torqued  about this move. I expect to get skinned when I get home tonight  . No offense but we were trying to stay out of the Mid-West. The up side is that we have freinds in Ohio and Michigan also my folks live in St Louis. Glad to hear that there are lots of schools in the area. What is the rent around there for a good area? you know some thing with a yard and 3 bedrooms.

P.S. Thanks for all your help guys nothing worse then flying blind into a new area.

JReed, you can't offend me talking about the midwest, I know it's not the most exciting part of the world. I tried my hardest to get away for a few year but jobs and family dragged me back, now I'm kind of settled in place. Indiana is a lot better than my old home state of Illinois. As far as rentals, they are going to vary greatly from one community to the next, I'm certain you can spend a lot less than in Cali. It's about a 3 1/2 hour drive down I-70 to St. Louis from where I live. You can PM me if you want so we don't have to bore everyone else with this stuff.

We live about 25 miles south of Avon and I was born there, and I currently practice about 25 miles away on the southeast of Indianapolis. The "hills" start about 5 miles north of my house (glaciers stopped there I think), and the land gets better for hunting and hiking. North and West of there it is really flat and being developed rapidly, East of there is Indianapolis.

We may still have a house for rent in August (about $800/month, big rural off-the-road yard), but I hope not (for our sake, because last tenants moved out 6 weeks ago, and we need to get it rented to have $ to pay the mortgage payments on it!).

Lots of shooters and hunters around here, but of course the more citified the areas the less gun-friendly. Still, the least gun-friendly area in this state probably beats the best area in Kalifornia. There are several gun clubs and ranges, although I don't usually shoot except at home since we live in the hills ourselves.

One of the best elementary schools in the state is about two miles from my house in a tiny rural town of about 1,000 or less population called Centerton. Very diverse around here, with people living in houses ranging from about-to-fall-in to $3 million, and they seem to get along with one another pretty well. Farming and commuting to Indy for factory jobs or executive jobs seem to be the main things. Lots of military and factory retirees out in the hills doing their hobbies, part time jobs, and such.

If you have any other questions about the area, let me know.

Jeremy, congrats, should be a good move for you. I grew up in Ohio and have liked every Hoosier I've met. Don't know anything specific but I am sure you'll have a great time.

Like Tutt said, we'll miss you and the boys at the reunion but I think you're in for a treat.

Where's your office?

I'll mail you my son.

:?
Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

Welcome to Indiana....basically gun friendly state and several state owned areas for public access to hunting and fishing...two suggestions for the area you will be in...

1. Avoid the Raceway Park (drag races) area when the Nationals are being run, traffic sucks and the local Leo's get real testy.

2. Avoid the Speedway (Indy 500) area on race day, same reasons as above.

...of course these warning don't hold if you like crowds and are an avid race fan...........................
