Longshot powder

Post by Bill in Oregon »

Just found a pound of this at an LGS and bought it. I see the burn rate is between Blue Dot and 2400, so it ought to work in some mid to high power handgun loads. What else is Longshot good for, boys?

Bought a few pounds of it during the last powder shortage, loved it in the 45 colt & 454
never shot the max load, but mostly mid range for Ruger only 45 colt, and starting load in 454
great powder

5 grains behind a 124 grain tumble lube cast in 9mm Luger works well for me.
Great in 28ga.
Not impressed with 38,357 loads.
Kind regards,

.

I just snagged 3 lb myself so I've been checking too. According to my Richard Lee book it does well for 38 Spl +P, 9mm, mid to upper range .357, max velocities with some .40 SW, midrange .41 and .44mag, and even a couple upper range .45 acp loads.

Use it in .480 Ruger and .45 Colt with 300 grain Speer jacketed soft flat points. It is also good for 20 gauge. Never tried it in .44 Mag, but as I have more of the Longshot than H110, I may try it.

Burn Rate Charts are have gotten very valuable. Using beginning loading data is advisable.
Beware of powders that won't fill the cast more than a little bit. YMMV

I use it for full power 10mm loads, and is just as good in the 40 S&W too.

The ones by RIA are well built. 10mm is a pretty useful caliber.

Yes Sir, a 1911 in 10mm is a dandy. Just be ready to chase brass about 30 yards. 😆

Darn 10s seem to be in short supply right now, along with about everything. I had a Glock Model 40 a while back and should have kept it.

It would seem that the shortage is still going on. Keep your eyes and ears open.

Ted, your gun is set up for the weaker 40 Smith and Weak cartridge, not the hot loaded 10mm as it was originally designed to be. You need to change out your recoil spring to a 22 lb one. All will be fine then. Its a bit harder to operate the slide though. Been there, done that in my Kimber 1911 in 10mm. I called up Kimber and asked to talk to their gunsmith. I don't remember his name, doubt I ever got it even. He just HATED the fact that Mike at Double Tap was making full strength 10mm ammo again in a 1911. What a bunch of pussies. Hopefully this is all corrected now, that was many years ago. But I was not impressed. -Tutt

Andy, you should tell us how you really feel about the 10mm Special. No need to hold back.

Seriously, the .40 has its place. Hunting is not its place, nor is any serious outdoor use. The 10mm is enough more than the 10mm special (some folks call it the .40) as to be a reasonable hunting and bear protection cartridge. I should find out what the spring poundage is in my RIA 10mm.

Well, I just about peed my pants when I read your response Pillar. It was so funny!! I have a few "sticking points" when it comes to the 10mm. For the longest time, the 10mm was down-loaded to 40 S&W. Call it "short and weak". You call it 10mm Special. Boy oh boy, load it as was it was originally intended by Colonel Cooper, he was a brilliant man! You can pass all the pathetic euphemisms of the dumb downing of the 10 mm to whatever weak wristed, pee pore shooter who couldn't handle or learn how to shoot a gun that actually recoiled. I'm just telling you, I saw some "kids" shoot this 1911 better than me with "full house" 10mm loads, and they actually didn't "pee in their collective pants" they shot it as good or better than me.

So yeah, anyone can shoot this gun, loaded to full house 10mm loads. It takes practice, but it can be done and will make you a better shooter.

Regards,

-Tutt

I have handguns in both calibers. I would never choose the .40 (10mm Special) for anything other than close range interpersonal crisis situations. Deer and wild pigs deserve more consideration. The .40 honestly does not have much more power than a 9mm. The 10mm loaded to original levels is a whole different class. I have handloaded for my 10mm using Accurate Number 5. That RIA weighs a lot more than my Glock in .40 Cal, and it has a much different sound. Because of the RIA's weight, shooting either one feels about the same as far as recoil. I wouldn't use my 10mm for home defense just due to bullet penetration. A 12 gauge Mossberg is even better in my opinion for home defense in bump in the night situations.
