TV - the Alaska Experiment
I was working on my genealogy stuff last night and had the office boob-box turned to the Discovery Channel (must have been watching How It's Made at some point) and this show, The Alaska Experiment in which (wonder of wonders) they actually let the participants HUNT and shoot GUNS. On San Diegan (I guess that's what you call somebody from San Diego, CA) said that she was didn't believe in guns but allowed as they might be more reasonable to have up there. Showed bears coming around the cabins (and tents) as well. The rest was the usual drama for city folks of looking for bears, catching salmon and sliding down mountains... Showed them guttin' game as well. Almost made me quit trying to find my fourth cousin 3 times removed...
Sincerely,
Hobie

My wife and I have been watching the show since it first came on. I hope that the paticipants leave the expeiment with a positve attidue about hunting and firearms. I thought it was funny how the female that is with the two men stated that she was thinking about becoming a vegiterian. That is until they were without any source of protein and one of the guys came back with a mountain goat, she changed her mind.

The scary and depressing thing is that all the clueless people VOTE. They have just as much say as WE do, when it comes to setting public policy on hunting, fishing, conservation, land use, and any number of public policies which WE know far more about.BenT wrote:I had to stopwatching it . It was to painful to see how clueless some people are. I started to wonder who was more clueless them or me for watching them. One show was enough.
I'm not trying to be arrogant by saying that, because if "we" is rural self-sufficient gun-type people, then perhaps we as a group know less about rush-hour traffic issues, and we get just as much say-so (theoretically) as they do about many regulations in that area.
The DIFFERENCE is that more "city" folks (I can't think of a better term, and I know that's not the right one, but you know who I mean) feel they have a right to tell everyone ELSE what to do. Most of "US" are content to be largely on our own, independent, and not bother what other people do, but the more inter-locked, inter-dependent, occupationally and culturally-niched people in our nation seem to assume that everyone has their same values, that nobody else is as smart, and that THEY should tell us dumb hilljacks how to live.

We also watched it for the first time last night. About fell out of my chair laughing when that one group started popping off with their single shot .22 rifle at a full growed bison. Amazed that the show handlers allowed that. Also started yelling at the TV at the dad & his daughters who busied themselves sweeping the cabin and arguing about building a clothes drying rack rather than being out setting snares, cutting/gathering wood, or something that would otherwise be useful to surviving. Oh he!!, I guess cleaning the cabin is useful - at least you have a nice place to starve in...

I enjoy most shows on the Discovery Channel. Especially those for survival. I am going to have to start watching for this one. Might be diffucult as I am not one to watch alot of t.v. and mostly catch shows by accident since I dont schedule time to watch TV.
Gun Control is not about guns, it is about control!
There's been some discussion of the show on the Alaska outdoors forum. The general consensus seems to be that they would most all starve if they had to do it for real. So long as you can look at it as entertainment, and not take it too seriously, it may be fine.
I havent seen it, I don't have a tv.
Well, I own one, but don't have an antenae, or cable, or satelite, just a vcr and dvd. Still havent turned it on in a year or so.

I don't believe most of the "family feud" type of banter on "reality TV", it's all created by the producers for effect. Just remember the father and sons who were building custom bikes. Real world is too dull for good TV. You know, like children obeying their parents. All for effect my friends, all for effect. The "dumbness" factor may not be real either.
