It makes me wonder, if the guy's really a hotel clerk, dressed up by the photographer.

I was waiting to see who would notice that. He was probably proud of some of his resent attire but he wears his Colt, knife, and boots like they have been with him forever. The cuffs of the chaps are dusty and worn. I have seen hundreds of photos of drugstore cowboys with props provided by the photographer. In my opinion this is not one of them. IMHO

Those old tin types are really neat. When you're away from your family for months on end and you get to the end of the drive you buy new dudes and get a picture to send or take home because those new dudes don't look new for very long. Tough life.

I watched some of the shows on the History Channel on cowboys and cattle drives in the last couple of weeks. In one they said one of the first things they did at the end of the drive was to buy some new, fancy clothes before going out hellraising in the saloons, gambling halls and whorehouses. I don't think I would want to go out on the town in the same clothes that I had worn for the last 3 to 4 months 24 hours a day either.

Sometimes at the end of the drive with full pockets, an old boy would buy a new outfit and have his picture made the same day.

If he waited a day or two, there might not be enough cash for the photographer.
