Advice on the best commercial cast bullet for Rossi .44 Mag

Post by Scott Tschirhart »

Does anyone know of a good commercially cast bullet that you have had luck with in the Rossi .44 mag?

I'm looking for a general purpose bullet to load for shooting around the farm. I would probably not load it over 1000 fps (it doesn't take a lot to kill armadillos and such).

I don't have any good advice on a source for you Scott as I'm a "roll your own" sort of guy. My Rossi is a full .430 bore diameter and I'll bet yours is about the same. I'd guess any cowboy action bullet in the 200 to 240 grain range, of .430 diameter or greater will do the job for you. And if they are cast of reasonably soft lead you can get away with a little smaller bullet, though I'd try to stay away from those of .426/.427 that are made for the old 44/40's.

Try a powder coated .430" bullet.

Marshal Stanton's 405gr BTB (beartoothbullets.com) I shoot it from a redhawk at abt 960 fps and it penetrates like a 45/70. This is a low pressure load, easy to shoot, and at least on the gong accurate every time.

the issue for the rossi will be the twist rate. the marlins will not stabilize this bullet, and I've tracked them going side ways within fifteen feet from the muzzle... BUT if your barrel will stabilize them, it's the highest TKO you can get that I know of, from a load that is low recoil and easy on hardware....

I think a 405 gr bullet is a bit of overkill for shooting armadillos.;-)

Sounds like a good idea to me.

never considered such a thing before. I don't understand the concept of overkill. Underkill I get. 405gr bullets are the low end of what I enjoy shooting. and if I'm going to kill an armadillo, I don't care what it thinks about my load. LOL  :D

I get these 44s from Maplewood Bullets. They are 277 grains and very very nice. Theyll cast them as hard or soft as you want. They run $28 per 100

They probably can help to decide how hard you need with the velocity and intended game. No need to use a piece of granite on deer.

in my early education about hunting with hardcast bullets I used a friend's 325gr pb bullets that was a hammer on deer. but one shot went thru the head straight on and traveled down the spine breaking up a number of vertebrae. that trip eroded a portion of the bullet and convinced me that I wanted a harder bullet, which led me to try BTB. The reason was that I was hunting in brer coastal grizzly territory, and I didn't want a snowflake to do the job a locomotive needs to do.

It's all I used for hunting, when I was feeding little ones that way.

for me the point of hard hardcast is, no leading at any velocity I shoot, and b. no deformation by bones or stopage at the "offside hide". my guide gun has only ever shot Marshall's hardcast, and I have yet to clean the bore with anything other than an oily piece of paper towel shoved thru with a dowel. low tech. cheap. effective.

Quite a difference in need when maybe wild pigs are the meanest around around versus big bears which consider you a potential meal. In bear country, I wouldn't be likely to use a soft 150 grain .30-30 if something with more power and penetration were available.

Scott, there's your best advice. That will give you samples to make dummy rounds so you can try them through the action. Always keep in mind these modern straight wall pistol caliber leverguns (all, not just the 92’s) are a lot like semi-auto handguns. There’s just some ammo they aren’t going to work well with.
