200 grain pin bullet in 38 or 357

Post by mickbr »

Tom at Accurate Moulds drew this for me. Inspiration was the old 230 grain pin shooting bullet and the 200 grain super police loads. Aka a 200 grain 'seated out wad cutter'. Purpose......well doesnt pay to get too carried away with actual reasons for doing stuff :D. I wont be shooting pins so much, maybe some water jugs and an occasional critter.

That would probably make a pretty efficient anti-personnel/dangerous game bullet as well.

Have you tested for spin-stability...?
Long bullets need fast twist, although flat meplats help keep them short-for-weight versus pointy ones.

I used to have a Lyman mold that was a .358” SWC GC that was supposed to be 215 grains . I used them a bit in Marlin 1894CB 357 with the 24” barrel . They shot really well but never checked velocity . Believe it or not I also shot them in a Marlin 1894CP 16” and again did very well . Wish I remmembered the Lyman designation number but I sold that mold close to ten years ago .

I dont think its any longer than the Hornady 180XTP. That said I think it will definetly keyhole in a Rossi 92 at low speeds with the 1:30. twist. Uberti and Win/miroku lever actions with about 1:18 should handle it better, also the new marlins which I think are 1:16 now?

Thanks Bill and I will clarify I just gave him an idea of weight, meplat and loaded length. He did the measurements and drawing.

Wadcutters are good possibilities for defensive ammo.

This one looks...interesting.

I would really like to see testing on a batch of these.

Gas checks, relatively soft lead, and either .38 or .357 loading. (probably couldn't go too soft for .357)

Hmmm...could you even load one of these in .38 - overall length?

Newton's Third Law being still valid, I have to wonder what it's like to launch of of these down range.

Should be fine from a .38 Special, keeping in mind the British 38/200 Mark I load was a 200-grain bullet at 625 fps in a .38 Smith & Wesson case.

I have a Mountain Molds 205 fat meplat. Drops .360” I can probably find the specs if you want. I can send you a few to try. I have run them to 1800 fps without leading.

Tycer thanks., Im chasing full meplat for this one but thanks for the offer. would be interested in any load data though ,if you want to share or PM. Understand if you prefer not, for the record everything will be fired in full strength 357's.

That's a swell bullet there, Tycer. Ready to do some heavy lifting, like Mick's.

I really can't because that bullet was designed for my Win 94 360 Dan Wesson. I've never loaded it in a 357 case.
I will say that Lil'Gun was my best powder and it seems to perform best at ~90% available case volume below the bullet. 360 DW, 357 Mag and 32-20.
Kind regards,
Tycer

I gotta tell ya. A heavy, large meplat 357 cal bullet will poke a clean 3/4" hole through and through. I mean it looks like a piece of copper tubing was driven through. No bloodshot meat-eat right up to the hole. At 1850 fps mv that bullet has traveled through 40" of meat and bone and kept on going.
Kind regards,
Tycer

Tycer, that bullet alone has me daydreaming about a little 92 in .357 for the first time in many, many years.

Thanks Tycer, no probs. I found some data out there for the 200 grain super police type bullets. Should be fun for starters

The old "Highway" load with the 200 grain round nose, was great punching cars at the time but little else unless it hit bone, it just whizzed through, the body, I know from experience, solid wad cutters seemed to work better {I believe} because of the lip on the face, and the lead being softer

I like the flat wide nose bullets for the hunting I have done with them. Success without a lot of torn up meat is pretty hard to argue with.
