Thanksgiving Projects
Been casting some bullets since the weather turned off wet and not real conducive to range time. I was getting low on these anyway so I made up a few to get me through. I find these are very accurate in the S&W Model 10.
I find working in the shop, casting, sizing, lubing is relaxing for me. Not everyone feels that way and that's OK. I enjoy it.
Besides these I cast some 190 gr. RCBS .30 caliber GC bullets that I want to test.

Re: Thanksgiving Projects
My loading setup is in the garage. I make a lot of ammo on rainy days so that I can shoot on sunny days!
Re: Thanksgiving Projects
Where do you get the lead nowadays? I cannot find any source around my area?

Texas does not really have temperature cycles. It only gets cold for about 2 weeks per year.

Re: Thanksgiving Projects
I get lead at the airport. They put a bunch of sheets of lead in the bottom of some planes when they bring them over from France (they tell me that it is for ballast). It appears to be pure lead, and the addition of a little tin makes some great bullets. The only issue is that the sheets are about 15 by 10 inches and you have to melt them in a big pot.
Re: Thanksgiving Projects
Is that an international airport? Who would I talk to around here?

Re: Thanksgiving Projects
I get lead from the Metal Recyclers. I hauled in 3 loads of scrap iron we cleaned up from the place here, sold it to them, then turned around and bought a bunch of lead from them. Clean lead costs more than dirty lead, but I take whatever they have. If you just want to buy and don't have any scrap metal it's OK. Just look up your local metal recycler and give them a visit.
Re: Thanksgiving Projects
I don't mind working in the shop. And as was said, cold weather here is in the 50's. Like today. 56 and rainy. The shop is insulated and stays comfortable. If we have a really cold snap .. freezing or below ... I have a heater I can fire up. Our shop is about 45' by 90' and has plenty of room. I have a .22 rimfire range in the shop and have the materials to stop bullets, so I test centerfire loads in the shop also.

I remember a long time ago it seemed like everyone was breaking up pianos, when mom and dad decided it was time for our piano to go I got quite a bit of lead out of it

I will check for a metal recycling place around me. I have tried at several tire places. They keep it for reuse, or one uses it on their dirt track race car.

Was that just because people shot at the piano player...? I never knew pianos had lead in them...!gamekeeper wrote: ↑Sat Nov 28, 2020 12:12 pm I remember a long time ago it seemed like everyone was breaking up pianos, when mom and dad decided it was time for our piano to go I got quite a bit of lead out of it

John Wayne movies put lead in the piano more than once.

Re: Thanksgiving Projects
I've been doing a bunch of casting over the last couple months, mostly black powder revolver bullets using Lee Precision molds by Eras Gone that duplicate the period specs. It's been a ton of fun. But over Thanksgiving? It was a ton of stuff on the honey-do list, plus some electrical work in the basement and garage.
