How much is enough?

Post by Scott Tschirhart »

I’m having a lot of fun going back and reading posts from some time back. While we all have our favorite cartridges (In my case the .50-70) I wonder how many of us hunt with something that we decided was well matched to the actual hunting that we do?

Last week I shot a cow (didn’t want to but I had to) and a squirrel. I used the same load and got about the same results on both critters. But it was just because that was the gun I happened to be wearing.

We are blessed these days. But I wonder if we could make do with the old .44 Henry Flat?

Yes Jim you are correct, perhaps this would be a better example of the .44 Henry all be it both were Hollywood fiction.

I hit a horsefly with a 6mm Remington using an 85 grain BTHP once....

...that probably was a bit of 'overkill'....

I shot a rat with a 45-90 in my inlaws barn.

The Henry Flat was not a bad round at all.

The picture you posted is a reverse...common for the time.--6

A guy over on CAScity has an original centerfire ‘66. He recently posted that his son has used it to take a bison. The bullet went through a rib, both lungs, and the heart before lodging in the ribs on the other side.

I was watching the movie "Silverado" the other day. I thought it interesting when Danny Glover's character asked if the bad guys knew what a Henry rifle could do in the hands of a man who knew how to use it. I thought to myself that we can do much better with a .45 Colt today.

I wonder if the published ballistics of the .44 Henry Flat were anywhere close to accurate?

That is an old family photograph. The two seated gentlemen in the photo are Texas Rangers (when they were more militia and not the law enforcement agency they later became) and are on my mother's side.

While shooting .45 ACP at cactus fruits with my boy at 21 ', a honeybee landed on a small purple thistle bud...penetration was complete. Used the same Colt to head shoot a 6' snake at 39' later that week, his head went sideways, my kind of snake.

Brings up the old debate, or question, "What's the one gun o caliber you'd choose if you could only have one?"

Ya know Jim, soooooo much can be done with a .22.....ya don't even need a silencer with CCI CB's...magazines and the gun are extremely dependable. Accurate enough for head shots to 150-200....if you know your gun....but you knew all that....

Another "ya know"....got to laugh like crazy when guys answer that "one gun" question with a 500 S&W..... :D ...but 40 years ago I was one of those guys

I would want to do a few modifications to my still factory stock 10/22. A better barrel, a good scope, and a different stock. None of that is difficult, and every 10/22 I have seen with that done to it is as accurate as 99% of all shooters are capable of handling. A reasonably light bull barrel, fluted or carbon fiber wrapped, should be light enough and accurate enough to make a .22 lr stand out.

I don't know how many might remember but several years ago we had a member here named Bruce. Bruce worked for the game dept here in Florida. When presented with the one gun question, his response was the .22 Mag. He said it would kill anything in N. America. After considering the choice of bullets I think he might be right.

A Charger pistol set up that way could work well. SBR or arm brace.

I wish I could FIND a few 44 Henry rounds to try out in my 66. Sure wish someone would make a batch.

I don’t think these would work in a ‘66, and if they did it would be as a single shot.

They had original center fire 66s? I was under the impression that all 66s were chambered for the.44 Henry Flat which was a rimfire cartridge. But I admit that I haven’t studied this in great detail.

According to Arthur Pirkle in Volume 1 of his Winchester Lever Action Repeating Firearms book, on pg 28 he states, "...Only a very few were manufactured in .44 Henry Centerfire. No other calibers of the M1866 were manufactured."

A fellow over at CAScity recently posted that all center fire versions (several thousand) were exported, mostly to South America and Europe. A few have made it back to the US.
But I wonder if we could make do with the old .44 Henry Flat?
The Henry Flat long gone, I've been feeling of late that I could be quite content with just a .44 Spl or WCF, for both handgun and rifle.
