MOVIES - Broken Trail

Post by DixieBoy »

They just ran Broken Trail on AMC. Sat and watched it while I was doing some paperwork. Man, that is one great old western. Just enough lever actions in there to qualify it for a mention here. What a great old western. - DixieBoy

No man on earth plays a cowboy better than Robert Duvall - he was incredible in Open Range as well, and as Gus McCree in Lonesome Dove... he sets the standard by which others are measured, IMHO.

His philosophy about women, in one of the scenes in Broken Trail, is enlightening.

I DVR'd it myself. Duvall is great. Need to put him and Selleck in one.

I am going to have to check out something on Broken Trail though. Unless I am mistaken (and I could be) but I believe the last time I saw that movie I noticed that when T.H. Church was sighting down his rifle to shoot a bad guy (can't remember the bad guys name) his rifle didn't have a front sight. I'll have to double check.

...yes, you have to overlook the omission of the front sight on Church's rifle...but other than that, a great flick.

Duvall was excellent as usual, but Church really did an excellent job. Love the horse herd scenes!

Anyone else notice at the start of the drive, when they were taking the herd for the 10 mile run, towards the end of the run on the right side, a horse went down and must have gotten seriously pummeled by the herd followwing behind. I'm suprised that wasn't cut out.

I liked Duvall in "Geronimo", and although not a western, "Second Hand Lions" is one of our family's favorite movies - he plays an excellent cantankerous old fanny burp. If you haven't seen it you should rent it.

Yes,Duvall is the standard by which all others are measured.
Trivia-what was Duvall's first movie role?

Also trivia-Church palyed the dummy mechanic on a TV sitcom about two brothers who ran a small airline.I cannot remember the name of that show.

If I recall correctly, Duvall's first role was in "To Kill a Mockingbird". I may be mistaken.

Apocalypse Now! When I was in the Army, that was our "Company Movie" and we would quiz each other endlessly about every detail during any down time. A very dark movie but Duvall was spectacular in that role as well.

He also played a sly/sneaky (but sympathetic in some ways) German soldier in a Combat! episode (c. 1962-64) that Sgt. Saunders had to deal with. If I'm not mistaken, it was a story about hidden mines in an otherwise mostly evacuated town--but I may be mixing and matching episodes.

Yeah, Geronimo was a great film, and for what it's worth, one of the few factual errors they let slip in there was the death of Robert Duvall's character, chief of scouts Al Sieber.

Sieber was shot years later, by the Apache Kid, but he didn't die. He was crippled in the leg. The Apache Kid escaped while on his way to Yuma Territorial Prison, and was never caught again.

By the way, you can still buy Lt. Britton Davis' book "The Truth About Geronimo" from which the movie was made. It's a great story from one who was there. - DixieBoy
