A temporary moratorium

Post by AmBraCol »

Guys, we've tried being civil and we've tried giving hints. But so far those tactics haven't worked. So, we're going to try something new. We hate to do it, but in the interest of the common good we're going to put in effect a moratorium on one specific topic - law enforcement - until the first part of June. And even after the moratorium is lifted, we expect posts to be positive - not endorsing bad behavior by those who abuse their authority, but also not tarring all law enforcement with the same brush. Instead, if you post on the subject we expect you to put some thought into the matter and present a calm and rational answer to any problem observed. It's easy to bash and rant and rave - but if we want things to change we must do so in a coldly rational manner rather than through histrionics.

Now, why? Because the current tendency to bash all police officers is a symptom of the greater problem - the obstinate refusal to treat others as we ourselves want to be treated. The attitudes expressed by many here (on both sides of the issue) merely enhance the "us vs them" mentality rather than seeking a good answer to the problems. This forum is not the place to foment that kind of attitude or activity - in either direction. So until Monday, June 2, 2008 we as a forum will not address the issue of law enforcement. Let's give it a rest, take a few deep breaths and when we come back to it let's do so in a manner which does not alienate anyone but rather seeks the greater good through constructive conversation rather than harsh and nonproductive rhetoric.

OK. Y'all can now burn me in effigy, say we're violating your first amendment rights, contact FARC and ask for a special hit squad, call for the revocation of my passport, hire a chinaman to curse me (Mark Twain reference for those who've not read "Roughing It") or whatever. But we'll merely nuke posts on the issue of law enforcement for the duration of the moratorium so please save us the trouble. :D This is NOT trying to favor "one group over another" because the issue is verboten in any light for the next few days. In the meantime we can practice our civility a bit.

Thanks!

No sir, I'm sure everyone wins - as long as everyone learns to step back and see if they contribute only heat or if they actually generate a bit of light...

IMHO, it's not about whos' whining or who's winning - I (for one) am just plain tired of the bickering, etc.

I come to leverguns to relax, not get more of what I already get enough of, from my green-eyed monster, when she's at home !

Some spend way too much time online in front of the PC, reading the Drudge report and the like.
Get a hobby.
Go for a hike, cast, reload, shoot, fish, work leather, knit.... something.
Constantly posting about it here will not solve a thing.
Nor will replying to those topics.

Now having said that who can we get elected to replace Ted Kennedy. 8)
That which does not kill me has made a grave tactical error.

True, especially when no one wants to admit there is a problem. Going for a hike or having a hobby and pretending there is not a problem will not make it go away, it will actually enable the problem. Not saying hiking and shooting is not a good thing, did some of both myself this weekend where I live here in the Rockies. Also cleaned a bunch of rifles, some that people can't own in other states, and would be arrested by thier own local heroes for having them. Fortunately the internet has allowed me to see there are problems that may not be directly affecting me locally, yet.

So, a topic like mine, about a stupid Public Policy that has nothing in specific to do with LEO abuses is still off limits?

Every bit of Anti-Gunowner legislation/policy is intimately tied to Law enforcement.

People who care about gun ownership should be worried about whether or not otherwise good cops will resort to enforcing, with their own guns, an Unconstitutional, anti-gunowner law.

Where do we draw the line? Our Leverguns are just as much at stake as plastic crunchentickers and EBRs...

Gentlemen,
You have stated your cases. The judges (owners of this forum) have ruled. Let us move on. If that’s not acceptable then take it to another court.

Keep on mind, we are only guest here.

Just wanting to make sure, since I don't remember starting a thread castigating all police officers...

Paul, I don't think you can support that statement given the context of the "moratorium." It's obvious there were complaints from "one group" about what the "other group" is saying. So the "one group" is being favored by your censure of the "other group."

You certainly have every right to favor whichever group you want, in this case the pro LE. However, it is favoritism.

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.
