Remington 870

Post by 6pt-sika »

Guy brought an 870 in the shop yesterday that he wanted us to sell . I didn't pay much attention until today and it turned out to be a circa 1954 in 16 gauge with a 28" modified barrel . The guns started turning brown but for what I paid thats fine . Now I've got a gun to use in the pump class at the vintage shoots .

Obviousely I have it apart , I'm gonna strip the wood tommorrow and let it dry then start putting Tung Oil on monday . I'm thinking twenty or so coats and it'll all be good . Think I have a line on a 28" full choke barrel so it may be added .

I've toyed with the idea of getting an 870 in each gauge for years, I've got a 12, just need a 16-410 now, taking donations

If this one wasn’t so old and so cheap I most likely wouldn’t have gotten it . I’m kinda after a Pre 64 Model 12 16 gauge with a solid rib and full choke . We will see how that goes .

Good score! Went to see a fellow some 3 years back with guns for sale, one was an 870 in 16g, which I was excited about till a saw a barrel so short as to be useless for birds, and with the dreaded polychoke, a deal killer for me. Had a medium condition model 19 Smith as well, wanting mint price for that, a wasted trip. I like tung oil a lot, What stripper will you use? Strip eze?

Be careful how you mention using a stripper around your wife. You could end up with a black eye before you can explain it is removing the old damaged finished on a firearm.

Thirty years ago I used stuff called Zipstrip had to wear rubber gloves if it got on you it would burn . Now I use a citrus smelling product the name evades me at the moment and the jugs at the shop .

Here’s the stripper I use now . The stuff kinda conjeals when it works on a Remington/Browning poly finish so I scraped it then used 000 steel wool saturated with lacquer thinner and it worked okay .

That was before I used the heat gun to help dry , but after it gun a good bit of the moisture off the surface it looks like the old wood might just have a bit of figure .

Well I’ve gotten three rubs of Tung Oil in already . A little quick but the first 5-10 I do faster than they suggest and after it gets a bit of buildup I do twice a day .

Haven't looked in years, but Remington did something in the 870 & 1100 no one else has done. Make dedicated left handed models. Yes, the gauges and options were limited, but at least they made something for the roughly 20% of the population most firearms manufacturers ignore.

Nicely done 6pt. Thanks for the stripper pics  The strip eze burns as well, a 1/64 th size spot feels like someone hit you with a soldering iron. Grew up with 870s in part, killed my first goose with one. Love em.
I've noticed lots of folks avoid scrapers, and may not know how to create and tune em right, I've got a pile of em as I find them fun and effective. Have a huge old saw blade I'm gonna cut up into scrapers when I get a hold of cuzbros plasma cutter.

I used a plastic scraper on this one . Years ago I’d use a piece of broken glass that was large enough to hold on to . I may go on and buff the action and barrel then let my friend drop them in the tank .

Put the 870 boat anchor back together today . The wood has about 25 rubs of Tung Oil and I’ll most likely add some more . Still needs a buttplate but it feels pretty decent . Old guns pretty slick but for 66 years old it should be .

It looks good to me. It gives the appearance of a gun that has been used but took it and can still dish it out. Sort of like a good boxer who was a champion but has been beaten once. Still not one to take lightly.

I wouldn't have bought it if it hadn't been cheap and was rather early for an 870 . Never been a big fan of 870's but this one feels kinda nice .

I decided to put the Remington buttplate on the gun today and grind the edges to matchup . Only knocked the wood twice and the Tung Oil cures that easy enough . The screws holding the plate on aren’t correct but they’ll do for now . This one did a pretty decent job a few minutes ago trimming tree limbs !

I've got a sneaking suspicion this old 870 sat beside or kinda close to a woodstove . The way the finish wood and metal looked before I got scrubbing on it kinda leads me to believe that .

Not many use the 16 gauge now. Too bad. It is a good size for most upland game. It kills pheasant well, is good for rabbit, and is not too much for bobwhite. 20 gauge does all of that well, and so does 28 gauge. For those like me who are not real good with a shotgun, 12 or 16 gives a little better chance with the longer shot string. My experience is that a 16 gauge kicks less than a 12.
Anyway, that one looks good enough to be used. You need to take it hunting this Fall.

I used my Parker 16 VH 28” this past January at the Pheasent shoot and plan on taking another Parker VH 16 for Pheasent in December . I’ll most likely try my handloaded #1 buck loads and home cast slug loads in this 870 . I tend to lean towards my old 10 doubles , 16 doubles and my 28 double .

Went to the club today and shot Skeet with another guy from the shop . In the third round I shot this old 870 and got 24 of 25 . I was pretty satisfied other than the fact that the one I missed occurred when I was trying to work the pump . Did okay at the other three doubles but not on station six

I've got a couple of 16 ga. model 12s. One was my Dad's, 26" full and the other belonged to Esperanza's Dad, 28" mod. I've got a couple of 12s too and a 20 with a rib. I really like model 12s. Keep a 12 with 6 rounds in the magazine hanging over the bed for repelling boarders. Yeah, they'll hold 7 with one in the barrel. As a tyke I watched Dad kill 7 Bob Whites straight with that old 16. They got up out of a brush pile by singles or doubles timed just about right and that full choke let him kill the long shots.

I had a mid thirties Model 12 16 gauge with a 28” full solid rib barrel . I could shoot that one very well . I’ve got my eye on another at an auction house that was made in the late 40’s early 50’s . We’ve also got one at the shop that’s been reblued and no solid rib I may make an offer .
