Made these two instruments last couple days, they date from the mid 1600`s to early 1700`s.
The first one is a Racket, there is 54 inches of air ways in it from nine passageways drilled in it and connected.
Here`s a link about them, they used a double reed to play which i haven`t got yet. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rackett
The second one is a Bassoon that came after the Racket, it has six feet of air way.

The one in the video was actully pleasant to listen to...sort of a calm bassoon sound. Is there a reed a reed or double reed involved?
Thanks everyone, Blaine they use a double reed which i`m supposed to get today but weather i can get it to work is another story.
Here`s a video of one i guy made that shows the bass sound they can make well.

Thanks Bill i made it from two pieces of wood, channeled them out with a wobbler blade on the table saw then glued them together.
Widened the right side to a bell shape using a router.

Pitchy, words escape except to say, I learnt sumthin new this weekend!
In stead of "Mr. Rogers Neighborhood", we could have a "Pitchy's Northwoods Garage" show!
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

I like both of those sounds, low down and not ear piercing like my brother's penny whistle . . .
Imagine feeding that Rackett thru a trunk amplifier to ward off the zombie racket from the other vehicles. Could probably vibrate every car at the intersection all the way 'round !
My reed didn`t come today so i made one from a straw, the problem i`m having is getting different notes from the finger holes.
All the holes make the same note, must be doing something wrong, maybe the notes are made from the reed but then what good are the finger holes.

BLAINE should be able to answer this... in my limited understanding, the holes change the length and therefore the pitch of the sound, as if you had 8 different organ pipes. or changing the length of a guitar string by stopping ie on a fret. oversimplified I know. I think you need to have all-but-one hole covered.... don't take my word for anything to do with music... I understand noise, but still can't explain it !!!
Thanks Grizz, i understand what`s supposed to happen what i can`t figure out why its not happening.
I think a proper reed will make a big difference, but i`m wondering about the size the finger holes should be also.
I did get a few different notes a while ago with the straw reed, i can`t play any music anyway but i always want to make things work like they are supposed to.

All music is arcane black magic to me. I cannot tell if a note is a sharp or a flat. Middle C sounds the same as G flat to me.

10 year old Gene wanted to play it again so he could pretend to fanny burp to the sound. I would consider that a success Lenn. You are getting are getting different notes from your fingering combinations.
