Saw this image of Ethiopian Emperor Menelik II in 1896 at about the time of the Battle of Adwa, in which the Ethiopians defeated the invading Italians.
Is that a Marlin?
Great picture. I really like the breeching on his saddle. I wonder if the bottom part is rawhide or some woven fiber. The braided part may be horse hair---or maybe human hair.
He looks well fed, rugged and ready for war for sure.
The only rifle to pack on a horse is a levergun......it's just fitting.
I'm wondering if that is a levergun or if we are seeing some of the trapping on his saddle? His hand looks to be closed right where the triggerguard would be. In addition the barrel looks too big .. more like a muzzle loader or a shotgun.
