American Ingenuity
Dad used to shoot rats in the basement with his Remington 1858 .44 cap n ball pistol, loaded with a full change of black powder and just a greased wad over the powder. It would roll the rats over and sometimes they would run off, but without any hair left on their body!

I have a door jamb gun, I'll have to post a pic later. I have used it as a mouse trap, normally the mouse is shredded!

Yes, we called them "gitter guns". They mounted on a stake that could be pounded in the ground or strapped to a post, some were brass, some were steel. They had a trip wire for bait and fired a 12 gauge. Very wicked for sure. They would disintegrate a mouse.

Re: American Ingenuity
I read somewhere those little 12ga tripwire gizmos have also been used as intrusion detectors . . . imagind the two german shepherds responding to that scene
Re: American Ingenuity
It seems to me that we are probably going to see a total breakdown of society in a few months. Having a way to warn us of intruders may be a good thing. Besides, mice do not yet have Lawyers.

Re: American Ingenuity
Yes, illegal for sure. The ones I've seen are long gone or I'd take a picture. Along with 1080 they were a tool of ranchers in the area where I grew up. Mainly used to slay coyotes or other critters. I have a pretty good picture of them in my mind----the barrel on the 12 gauge was barely longer than a 2 3/4" shell. They had a hammer similar in design to the pinned S&W hammers which was powered by a coil spring. They had a slotted slip fit cover that hinged over the breech that held the shell in. The trigger was a simple sear similar to a pre 64 Model 70 or 98 Mauser with the trip wire hooked to it.
When I was a kid in the 60's I remember seeing several of them hanging with Newhouse traps on the side of a trapper's cabin that I knew. Other's I've seen were in collections or some were one offs that someone happened to pick up.
I never heard of anyone falling victim to one.
Today, with all the people out and about they would be very dangerous, I'm sure.
A friend of mine who does a lot of black powder stuff told me he has seen pictures and drawings of ones made for black powder, so there are examples that show they have been in use for a long time.

I would like to replace skunk in the illustration with a caricature of a masked burglar, then have stickers made to place on all my doors and windows. Better than a ADT sign.

Re: American Ingenuity
Back in the days when gamekeepers were feared these guns could be found in the woods frequented my poachers, they were also used in cemeteries to stop body snatchers.
