My first wooden bucket, plus canteen

Post by Pitchy »

Made from oak, probably won`t hold water but may make a good trash can. :)

If it does not hold water, can you at least carry a tune in the bucket?

Lenn, great first edition. I have never had the eye, the sharp tools or the patience to make all the angled cuts required for a tight bucket. I once had a link to an old black and white silent educational film of a pair of Swedes making a bucket. I am so sorry I lost that link. Their workmanship was just amazing.

Might not hold water until you let it soak in water and the wood swells. But, I've seen very large (industrial waste water size) tanks made from redwood that were water tight. When the cleaned them and they dried a bit they would leak. The guys just filled them with water and in a short time they were water tight again.

Heck, as a kid some of the water lines in the area I lived in were redwood. Construction was basically the same as this bucket.

Thanks Gunny, the trick is getting the angle right on the edges of the boards to the diameter of the bucket i`m sure there`s a mathematical way of doing it but i`m not smart enough for that.
This bucket they were cut to 15 degrees and there`s gaps on the inside between the boards, i think 12 would of been better.

Here`a the video i used in the build.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-sVsYkuT-4U

Putting the tape on really helped picking it up and rolling into a circle.
I went out and filled it with water and to my surprise it only leaked in one place on the sides, most was leaking out the bottom witch surprised my too as the bottom fits into the bucked against shoulders ans glued .
I have it sitting in another tub of water for a while and we`ll see if it swells up.
I am down loading a video now of filling it with water the first time and will post when it`s done.

Here`s the first video.

If I figer coreckly, 16 pieces(sides), the edge cut angle would be 11 1/4 Degrees. 360 degrees divided by 16 pieces comes to 22.5 degrees. each piece has 2 edges so divide that by two. 11.25 degrees.

Soaked it for half a day and still leaks on the bottom so will have to seal with something.
Won`t be using it to haul water anyway so will probably leave as is and may make another now that i`ve learned something. :)

We had a couple of those wooden buckets around here a while back. I think they were bible school projects for the older boys. We used them for trash cans.

Nice job Lenn.

Now we can add "Cooper" to your list of skills!

Examples of a Cooper's work include:
Casks, barrels, buckets, tubs, butter churns, vats, hogsheads, firkins, tierces, rundlets, puncheons, pipes, tuns, butts, troughs, pins and breakers.

Let's see a firkin or rundlet next!

How about a cask? Of Mead? Once you get it to not leak, we should all meet up someplace at a lake.

Lenn, back when I was shooting black powder rifles every year we'd have a rendezvous. One of the guys that came to set up shop was a cooper. He had several special tools for making the buckets. If they leaked he put wax in them where the leaks were then filled them with boiling water.

That just reminded me, a few years ago I bought a wooden barrel canteen (colonial style) the instructions that came with it was pretty much the same, wax and boiling water.

Thanks fellers, we are making a Revolution style canteen as we speak letting glue dry at the moment.
It`s looking pretty good, made it from Oak, i was reading they used a Pine pitch mixture for sealing also but i have lots of wax but can`t get too the inside.
Ya can buy the pine sealer on line.
We`ll get it done and see how it turns out, will post a picture later today.

Lenn, I found a photo of the canteen I had years ago, thought you might be interested, most were flatter canteens and look easier to carry than this barrel shape.

Buy a toilet bowl wax ring. I doubt it's real bee's wax but I bet it'll work. It and olive oil are what I use for black powder bullet lube. Come to think of it, It's just what I use for bullet lube period.

That second bucket looks nice too. Does it hold water? Did the angles work out right? I think I figured it right but then again, every time I do my taxes, they always say I owe more than I figure I should  The basic formula is just divide 360 (degrees) by the number of pieces used for the sides (Doesn't matter how many), then divide that number by two. That would be the angle of degrees for each side of the board. Like with your cantine, you have 12 sides. 360 degrees divided by 12 would be 30 degrees. divide that by 2 and it should be 15 degree angle on both sides of board. Is that what you cut the cantine boards at, it looks pretty tight. You should make about 50 of them, fill them with whisky and store them in the shed for a year or two
