Colt 1851 navy
having just watched GUN STORIES about Buffalo Bills 1851, it looked to me to be comparable in size to my j frame Smith but with a longer barrel. those of you that have one ( I know they are different actions) would you compare it to a j,k,or l frame in size and weight?

Re: Colt 1851 navy
I would def compare them more to a k frame. I don't own a S&W at the moment to compare them too but I do have a few 1851s.

Re: Colt 1851 navy
The 1851 is closer in size, wt/ & balance to the Colt SAA.

Indeed! Tough to compare an 1851 Colt to any of the alphabet model S&W revolvers. Just so different that even if the weight was identical, the feel in your hand is completely different.

The Navy has the grip frame that was retained for the SAA. I just curl my little finger under the butt and it keeps it from rolling down in my hand from recoil.

Re: Colt 1851 navy
Bingo! The SAA grip pretty much mimics the 1851. There are some SAA's now that have an 1860 grip frame. I love the 1860 myself - just like to have a full grip on the gun. Both are the most natural grip one can have on a handgun, in my humble opinion.
