Broke a Leupold today
I have my Vari X-III 3.5-10 AO, serial # J194XXX for 25+ years. It has been on my custom 7mm Mag. Over 2000 rounds have been fired looking through it. It has held zero and had never been adjusted all these years. Today, RKrodle and I were trying out the 7's for an upcoming mule deer hunt. My first few shots were off. We talked about the gun not being fired in a long time, etc. Then the shots started walking right little by little. We made an adjustment. More walking right. Then suddenly, blurry. Perfectly clear one shot and blurry the next. Fiddling with it proved that at 3.5 the focus is perfect. As you increase magnification the focus gets worse and at 10X you can't even see through it. I shot my first 400 head of big game animals through that scope before I "retired" the rifle. I removed the scope for the first time in all these years. What a somber moment, you'd think it was a pet the way it made me feel. Oh well - off to the Leupold hospital for surgery and rehab. (Or maybe they'll replace it with the latest VX-III). If it gets replaced, I want the old one back to mount on a plaque and hang in the trophy room. Such is life with mechanical things.

Ricky, at least I wasn't there to help break it. 86er would probably never let me shoot a Water Buffalo again if he thought I helped break it.
Seriously, that scope soulds like it held up to a lot more than anything I'll ever put a scope through. If I get another scope I think it will be a Leupold. 86er, if you mount it on a placque, will it be a full body mount, a head and shoulders mount, or what?

Joe, you are just a heartbreaker.
Maybe it was just jealous of the amount of use his 86 receives.

Joe, you are my kind of guy! What a fitting end to a loyal hunting companion!!!86er wrote: If it gets replaced, I want the old one back to mount on a plaque and hang in the trophy room.
I just sent in a 1960s Vari-xII 2-7 compact for repair last month. It was on my dad's 264 since new. I got a brand new VX-II sent back no charge, but it never occured to me to ask for the old one back too. I hope they let you keep yours. They are a great company - there's no reason to every buy anything else IMO.
