44-40 Shell Holder question

Post by J Miller »

Hopefully someone will be able to help me on this.

My old Bonanza shell holder cross reference chart for the 44-40 calls for a #26 RCBS shell holder.

My 2003 RCBS catalog calls for a #35 shell holder.
In this catalog it says the #26 shell holder fits the 7mm x 65 Rimmed cartridge. Whatever that is.

Several years ago I purchased an RCBS shell holder for my set of 44-40 dies. The blister pack said clearly 44-40 on it and the number was 26.

So, what is the difference between the two shell holders? The #26 holder I have fits the cases OK, but if the #35 fits better I'll order one.

Anybody???

THE NEW ONE, #35 , DOES TEND TO FIT THE 44-40 AND 38-40 CASES A BIT MORE SNUGLY, JOE. I USED THE OLD ONE FOR YEARS WITH NO REAL PROBLEMS TO SPEAK OF BUT THE NEW SHELLHOLDER SEEMS TO ME TO LET THE NEW PRIMERS TO BE SEATED A BIT MORE STRAIGHTLY AS THE BRASS IS HELD MORE TIGHTLY. I THINK IF WHAT YOU HAVE IS WORKING FINE, WHY ARGUE WITH SUCCESS.
THE 26 SHELLHOLDER WAS TO BE USED FOR SEVERAL BELTED CASES , 7MM MAG ETC MADE OVER SEAS BY SAKO, SUENSVA METALVERKEN, DWM, NORMA, ETC.
I DO HAVE ABOUT ALL THE RCBS SHELLHOLDERS IN THEIR NUMEROUS PERMUTATIONS AND EVERY NOW AND AGAIN IT HAS BALED ME OUTTA PROBLEMS WHERE TOLERANCE STACK WAS ALL IN THE SAME DIRECTION.

Thanks Terry,

I'm putting together a group of shell holders to be modified for my Co-Ax presses so I think I'll order me in a #35.

I use a #35 shell holder for 44-40, I also have a # 38 it works as well as the #35.

RCBS suggests the #35 for 44-40.
