First rifle in 30-30 for me Now w/ Target Pics!
I spoke to a lady that told me in 1980 her friends bought a rifle for her as a joke. I told her they could play that joke on me anytime! It ended up being a Glenfield Model 30. It has sat in a closet and a laundry room for 28 years, unfired. I got it today and it was everything she said it was. RKrodle and I shot it with the open sights and 125 gr loads at 2000 fps. It grouped into an inch at 50 yards off the bench. At 100 yards we could keep the shots in the 2" "bullseye". This was accomplished without moving the sights - very lucky for us. Then we mounted a scope and loaded up some 110 gr SP's at 2400 fps. Ricky's new chrono got its first test run and it was essential for getting the loads we wanted. They shot 6 to 8 inches higher than the 125's and less consistently. We loaded up some more 110 SP's at 1998 fps using 22.5 gr 4198. They hit the same point of impact as the 125 gr RN at 50 and 100 yards. With the scope the first 3 shot group at 100 yards went into about a 1/2 inch. We loaded up another bunch of ammo but the dinner bell was ringing and I had to go. We accomplished what I set out for: A light-weight accurate rifle with virtually no recoil and low noise that can take medium game out to 200 yards. Hopefully Ricky can post a photo - I left the gun with him figuring since the scope and mounts were his he is a half owner. Boy - the 30-30 I had little interest in previously sure proved a lot of fun! Now if we can find time to zap something........

Funny you should post this. I'm in my mid-50's and have been shooting since old enough to hold my great-grandfather's Winchester .22 single-shot. I've fired a few .30-30's, but never owned one. I have (counts on fingers) 5 lever actions for .22 to .45-70, no .30-30 though.
A couple of years ago, I decided I wanted one. At first, I thought of the Browning Traditional Hunter, but too heavy for caliber, to me. Then I decided on a Winchester, but which one?
Took my time, did the research, several good choices. I knew I wanted a rifle length barrel, and did not want a full-length magazine tube. So; Pre-64 model 64, 64A, one of the various special editions, really hard to decide. At one point I had decided on the "Black Shadow" model, but in the end decided on a wood stock.
There didn't seem to be a really bad choice, especially for someone like me who can live with a safety, if need be. So Friday my Grade I Centennial arrived, and I'm really, really happy with it. Have to give a shout out to Tuco on this forum who patiently answered some questions I had. I haven't fired it yet, hope to Thursday though. Still haven't decided on a Marbles tang site, or a Lyman receiver sight. Hope mine shoots as well as yours! Here are some pictures, with the safety standing proud:

Bullet Bob,
For half the money I'll suggest this Winchester Tang Peepsight from Jeff's Outfitter's!

Nice rifle, and a good shooter too. Someday I'll have to get a .30-30 again, too. My wife stole mine and she is a better shot with it to boot. Hope you can use it on a hunt and post the results here soon.

Bullet, one of the finest rifles extant - with the coveted cross bolt safety. Mine shoots well with the regular federal ammo and the Leverevolution. I think these are great pieces. On this target the light was high and behind on the left - I think the two high shots were a little carelessness in sighting on my part.
