Kit gun box?
My friend has a kit gun he knows little about except it is a family gun since new.
Any info y’all have would be appreciated.
He’d like to find a correct box for it.

Good as it gets. I regret letting this model 51 go. It was .22 mag and I had a extra 34 cylinder fitted for it in .22lr. Also own the 34 in 2".

Very nice Bill.
Tycer, I've seen a plain cardboard box go for as much as $50 in only fair shape.

Re: Kit gun box?
Looks brand new to me!
Good idea to put it in the appropriate box if possible.
I still have the S&W box that my M19 came in back in the 1950s. Along with the supplied cleaning tools.

Re: Kit gun box?
Except for the fact other people want the box I could care less. I cant count the boxs I pitched or didn't even ask for when I bought a new gun many years ago. Most people likely felt the same when I first started liking guns seventy years ago. Yeah, now I keep them but mostly because they are valuable to others if I sell.

.
Tycer, that 4" bbl'd Kit Gun, with the flat latch, is what later (after 1955, IIRC) became the Model 34.
(the earlier 22/32 Model 1953 was issued with only a 6" bbl)
Your friend's Kit Gun would have been issued with a blue cardboard box, ILO the later plastic box.
There were two different cardboard box styles/eras (early/late).
This is an example of the style I believe was used for that Kit Gun
This is an example of a later style cardboard box
If your friend wants a real Kit Gun box, being as plentiful today as chicken teeth, it will cost him dearly - and will still not have the correct revolver SN on it.
If your friend just wants a correct style box for it, there are several of the correct size/config for sale that will fit a 4" Kit Gun, but would show a different model on the label.
Those boxes are available for $50-$100, today: https://www.gunsinternational.com/guns- ... =101239792

Re: Kit gun box?
Nice diamond gripped mid fifties flat latch. Boxes for those can run as much as the gun...if you can find one.
I'm puzzled by the "Z" prefix on the serial number and the "E" stamped on the right side of the barrel, right before "22". That's non factory.---6

Re: Kit gun box?
Six, AFAIK the number stamped into the frame under the crane is not the SN (which is on the bottom of the gripframe) - it's an assembly number.

Re: Kit gun box?
As mentioned above a factory box will not be numbered to the gun so why not look to find a nice fitted wooden box? If he is going to spend to get just a cardboard box I'd go with wood that is nicely lined with felt and since it's an heirloom it deserves better !

Re: Kit gun box?
The purpose of a factory box is to enhance its desirability for it shows originality and "completeness". Same reasons why car collectors get a woodie when they have the build sheet and original sales records.
it's easy to change the serial number on the box.....Old model Rugers were marked with a grease pencil, ......wipe off, write on. As long as it's the correct box as to model and era, most collectors are happy.
I once had an old Colt .22 pistol...little thing from the 1880's that was worth about $400 but because it had the original box, I got $800 for it.
The older the gun, the more it's worth, percentage wise, with the box. Buddy of mine has probably 100 WW2 1911A1's of which a dozen have the original Kraft boxes they were shipped in.---6

Mr. Colt would not have used dingbats but Mssrs Smith and Wesson did.
