got the Sportster home yesterday. Picked up a new battery today, it's on the charger now.
We'll see if it starts tomorrow.
Ignore all the furniture, I've had my mom's stuff in storage for over a year. The garage is finally done so I was tired of paying $200/ mo to keep it somewhere else.

The furniture's OK - we've seen more than a few hog riders who keep their bikes in their living room...……
You might want to put a drip pan under it just in case it decides to mark it's spot. Especially after it's been sitting for so long. Be sure it's full of 50 wt. before you start it. Good luck.

Depending where, and how long it's sat, I would.....
Put a few drops of Marvels in the cylinders. While it sat, I would drain any fuel, flush the tank, pull the petcock and clean it and the screen.
Pull the carb and clean thoroughly.
Check the brake calipers for free movement.
Drain the oils for an extended time, then replace with the lightest synthetic thats recommended. New filter, also.
Make sure no mice, etc, are in the exhaust.
Try a start after reassembling and fresh fuel. If she starts, let it idle for a minute or so. Pump the clutch a few times and make sure it isn't sticking. If everything seems ok , add some Seafoam and run it some more for a little longer intervals. Once it's been run a while at full temp, drain all the oils and replace with a new filter.
Replace the tires before riding on the road! They degrade with age.
It will/may leak oil from several places. I would give it a while and keep wiping it off. A good many times, dried gaskets will "heal" and mostly seal up. I've seen it more than once. May.......may not.
Sorry so long winded, but it's a cool old Sporty and should be saved.

I can't even get the right battery for this stupid thing! The first one was too big. Took it back, guy gave me one ( for another $45) and the terminals were reversed!
Used to take me 10 minutes max, to change out a battery on one of my Kaw's or Hondas! The way this is set up is just dumb. Why in the F are the terminals on the back and you need baby hands to get in there???
I finally gave up and went to work on a plumbing issue that Bubbles wanted me to fix. Almost flooded the basement! And that's something I'm supposed to know how to do. I gave up for the day!!
I'll take another run at the Sportster, but I'm really thinking we would get a whole lot more use and fun out of a new fourwheeler!

Been riding Harleys for 45 years plus its blood sweat and tears ya gotta like to work on them though the new ones are some what trouble free.
Get er started take it for a ride and you`ll either love it or not and go from there, the thing about Harleys is they get in your blood and then there`s no turning back.
I`ve learned a lot of cuss words with Harleys but hope to die owning one and thinking i will but a biker is a biker to me no matter what he or she rides.

Finally got it started!
Three different batteries and multiple trips to the parts store to get one that fit and had the terminals on the right ends. A nice lady at an Auto Zone actually knew what I needed and helped me get the right one. Fired right up and it's been sitting for 5 years. Took it for a spin around the neighborhood for bit. Haven't been on a bike for 7-8 years, funny how it comes back to you so quickly. The one thing that threw me off was the foot pegs and controls are much farther forward than I'm used to as a dirt bike/ Dual Sport guy. Still don't know what to do with it, it's too small for me but it was still fun.

30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres
250 Savage... its what the 223 wishes it could be...!
It would probably not feel as small if it had regular risers instead of the slight [pullback risers, and if it had handlebars that didnt come back as far. Thats one of the things thats nice about the H-Ds, they are really easy to change so many things and theres a LOT of parts variety available. I find good stuff at shops for pretty cheap just by asking about used parts, specific things or just general stuff.

A first generation in 38wcf followed closely by a 32wcf. Anither one i would love to fondle is a King Conversion Colt. A 2nd generation in 38 special would really appeal to me too. A M92 or 1873 in 38wcf would also be hard to pass up.

You are right. I'm used to wide, kinda straight handlebars and these just feel weird. My brother in law is a tiny guy, honestly not sure how he could even ride this thing but he did. Still thinking about what to do with it. It's not going anywhere soon, and not taking up much space so I'll keep fooling with it. Still really impressed how quickly I got it fired up and out for a couple short rides.
Still, a nice SAA would be a lot of fun too!!

Like Malamute said, a set of drag bars with a straight 4" riser would do wonders. A seat change can help, also.
Plus, it'll look cooler. But, I may be biased.

The factory pullback risers that are on the bike with drag bars might be good. Its what I have and like quite a lot. Its about perfect for riding position for me, upright without leaning forward too much. It can probably be done without changing any cables or wires.
If theres any dealers or independent shops around, you might ask if they have any used drag bars to try. Last used bars I bought were $10 I think. You need the ones that are dimpled for the wires.

There are a few non-Harley, Harley bike shops around. Great suggestion.
