U.S. Camel Corps....
Never knew about the military trying camels, but I guess it made sense at the time, since they can carry over 40% of their weight in cargo, and adapt to harsh conditions... https://armyhistory.org/the-u-s-armys-c ... xperiment/
Heard about it from an unlikely source....
https://youtu.be/JTCg6PGaOkM....a later episode, unsure which, but the series is interesting.

Here are some folks keeping the history alive. http://texascamelcorps.com/
Nearly every western on TV in the 50's and 60's had an episode about camels or the camel corps.

Re: U.S. Camel Corps....
Locally we have a historical site called the Drum Barracks. These were the home of a locally stationed camel troop.
There haven’t been any camel sightings in our local deserts for some time. But wild donkeys have done very well in our high desert. And as they are curiosity (an invasive species that federally protected), they can’t be molested in any way.
They have bred so successfully that one NASA site has to pay people to clean up all of the donkey droppings.

Re: U.S. Camel Corps....
I've been fascinated by camels since I was a kid. Amazing critters.
Re: U.S. Camel Corps....
I've seen camels on the range between Presidio and El Paso, TX.

There was a comedy movie done in the 70s called "HAWMPS." It had an all star cast with a lot of western type actors.

Re: U.S. Camel Corps....
They used to have camel races in Virginia City, Nevada. Haven been there for some years so I don't know if they are still happening. Seriously, camels are one ugly and repulsive critter. I pity the poor troopers that had to deal with them.

As a kid growing up, an elderly neighbor had been in the British Imperial Camel Corps Brigade during the First World War, being a kid I never got to ask him about it.

Re: U.S. Camel Corps....
GK you can find more info, Google" camp Verde texas" I used to take my kids swimming there when they were little.
You find this of interest as well, from the same area Google " Blanco hanging tree" certainly not the South's finest moment.

Thanks TANGO 4C very interesting information.
I have never seen much written about the Camel Corps so I now I really regret not pestering my old neighbor when I had the chance.

Re: U.S. Camel Corps....
I vaguely recall seeing a list of protected species for one of the states in the US, and camels were on that list. Sorry, but I cannot recall which state it was.
