Seems like the store shelves around here have been stuffed with the .450 bushmaster rifles& ammo for a few years...I bet there will be some used ones for sale.

Re: A Brand New Winchester Calibre At Shot Show
Interesting, I do like to see new cartridges. I wonder why they show the penetration at 200 against a 243 & 223 as opposed to 30-30 & 32 or 35 at 100? Of course it's going to penetrate better with more bullet weight. I'd rather see data for big game class of rounds( nothing wrong with 243) as well as velocity, drop chart. What's the parent case? When is release date? What guns available?

Re: A Brand New Winchester Calibre At Shot Show
Ok parent case is 223. Claims are it's the fastest straight wall case. 250 yd gun.

Re: A Brand New Winchester Calibre At Shot Show
145 to 265 range of bullet of weights? That struck me as unusually broad. I wonder what rate of twist in the barrels.
It'd be cool to see the Winchester 1886, 71 and a reintroduced Winchester 88 in this.
Just sayin'

Re: A Brand New Winchester Calibre At Shot Show
Clearly a round designed to appeal to one market -- states where rifle hunting is limited to straight-sided cases. Without that restriction, I think I'd prefer the .35 Remington. And I wonder about headspacing -- -- from the looks of it, I would guess it headspaces on the case mouth, meaning that for reloading you'd have to be very careful about exact case length.

My hope would be that Winchester might put that new 350 in a lever action. It will be interesting to see what the
ballistics look like. Those should be out soon I would think. Has anyone seen a box of these in a store ?

So it’s like a .357 Max?

Re: A Brand New Winchester Calibre At Shot Show
Looking at the Winchester site I did not see it listed for any of the guns.
It has to be case mouth headspace- watch that COAL !
Rimmed case would have been a better idea BUT they designed it to work on the AR so that guys can hunt with their ARs.

Re: A Brand New Winchester Calibre At Shot Show
Pretty much like a 357 max. but 0.11" longer and having a .223 rim. Will be a great little round for the AR style of rifles. Maybe Browning and Henry will make some leverguns in the caliber

Re: A Brand New Winchester Calibre At Shot Show
I would doubt it. A cartridge in a tube-magazine rifle needs a strong crimp to avoid bullet set-back, and a strong crimp doesn't really jibe with a cartridge that headspaces on the case mouth. It would probably work in a box-mag levergun, though, like the Browning or the Henry Long Ranger.daisygordoninc wrote: ↑Tue Jan 22, 2019 9:29 am My hope would be that Winchester might put that new 350 in a lever action. Re: A Brand New Winchester Calibre At Shot Show
Just what we needed, another new cartridge. Wonder why they didn't just use the .357 Maximum and load it with the same bullets? Could be the rebated rim is better for some actions than the rimmed .357 Max, but for others the rimmed case would work better.

I find it interesting that a fellar over on the AR-15 site in the "Variants" section has been building ARs in .357 based on the .223 case for over 6 years... https://www.ar15.com/forums/AR-15/357-A ... /#i7816498

I don't see anything which stands out to me. I have a .44 mag Ruger semi auto which works incredibly well, and I can load it heavy for whatever I need. It works best with near maximum loads and hits like it should without a lot of recoil. That new cartridge doesn't seem to have anything I need.

It's a straight walled rimless? Does it head space on the cartridge case mouth? I'll stick with my 357 mag Trapper.

Re: A Brand New Winchester Calibre At Shot Show
Nothing new about manufacturers stealing wildcat rounds that the general gun population developed. It's happened ever since guys first wildcatted a cartridge. Cartridges like the .22-250 that was the old .250 Savage necked down to .22 caliber in the 1930's, and then in the 1960's adopted (or stolen) by Remington and called their own.Griff wrote: ↑Tue Jan 22, 2019 4:09 pm I find it interesting that a fellar over on the AR-15 site in the "Variants" section has been building ARs in .357 based on the .223 case for over 6 years... https://www.ar15.com/forums/AR-15/357-A ... /#i7816498
But sometimes it takes a major manufacturer to adopt or steal a cartridge before it can be really successful. But sometimes they simply grab it for a short time, and they also give up on it if the public doesn't go wild over their new offering.

Re: A Brand New Winchester Calibre At Shot Show
One thing I question when I see a "new and improved" cartridge is what does this cartridge do that others won't? From the posts above it seems that the new cartridge will work in an AR type rifle and not much else that several others won't do...

Looks like they "re-discovered" the .351 Winchester Self-Loading.
In the video from the SHOT show, something looked wrong with the AR magazine. Is the 350 Legend a "Long Action" and have to use a AR-10 size receiver?
I'll stick with the 300BLK and 357 Maximum.

mm93,
yep, I knew all that... and you're right... it usually does take a large company to make a wildcat successful. From what I read it does work on the AR15 platform. On the link I put above, I think I read something about the mags needed the lips modified.

After a second look at the video, I think the magazine is for a long bolt action, not an AR15.

Re: A Brand New Winchester Calibre At Shot Show
The .350 Legend has a rimless case, more suitable for a boltgun than a classic levergun like the Winchester 71, 73, 86, 92 & 94 - but I can see converting an existing Winchester 88, a Savage 99C (detachable mag), or a Remington 7600 pump.
.
Re: A Brand New Winchester Calibre At Shot Show
I'm scratching my head.....As far as out-performing other straight wall calbres, except for less recoil I can't see this 350 being more "effective" than a .444 or 45-70....what am I missing?

Re: A Brand New Winchester Calibre At Shot Show
I saw this in the retail magazine Monday and thought I might build an upper . But to be honest I’ve never been much of a 35 cal person other then the 357 MAG . So I doubt that f I build one , think I’d rather have a 338 Federal for my AR-10 over this thing for my 15 .

Re: A Brand New Winchester Calibre At Shot Show
That's about it. It does have a place with the AR's. Heavier than .223 and not as bruising or as expensive to shoot as the 450 BM along with having better terminal ballistics than the 300 B.O......Rock Steady made another good point comparing it to the old 351 Winchester. Had the old 351 shot a bullet that was 357 instead of .351 it might still be around, possibly in the AR "platform" or whatever that word means.
Re: A Brand New Winchester Calibre At Shot Show
All these new cartridges just make ammo more expensive and harder to get.
I will say, for any new cartridge to get a foothold, fitting in an AR is right up there with a catchy name. Like it or not, the AR pattern rifle is thoroughly entrenched.
This is good for everyone. The more people that hunt with the AR, the less likely a new AWB will become reality.

Jay...maybe so......with the way democrats are acting I would have expected a riot by the people...but instead Nancy Pelosi's thinking is being embraced by a lot of Americans......so....that means if the AR is "America's rifle", it would be nothing to outlaw it when the Dems take total control in a few years...or they will just make the gas impingement system on an AR illegal to have.OldWin wrote: ↑Thu Jan 24, 2019 1:40 am All these new cartridges just make ammo more expensive and harder to get.

Some of those Midwest states wont allow those two cartridges as they have a maximum length rule that eliminates the longer straight walled calibers.

If I’m not mistaken you can use both of them provided you cut the case down something like a 1/4 to 1/2 an inch . And if I lived there I’d have six or seven in my pocket that met specs for the bunny warden and 10-12 more that weren’t messed with .marlinman93 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 24, 2019 11:26 amSome of those Midwest states wont allow those two cartridges as they have a maximum length rule that eliminates the longer straight walled calibers.

Re: A Brand New Winchester Calibre At Shot Show
I suppose you can if shortened to legal length. But I wouldn't want to do that and shoot them in rifles chambered for the original caliber. Too much jump from case to rifling to shoot with any accuracy. And if it required a special gun built up for a shortened version, then might as well chamber to a readily available common caliber, so you don't need special made brass, and dies.6pt-sika wrote: ↑Thu Jan 24, 2019 3:17 pmIf I’m not mistaken you can use both of them provided you cut the case down something like a 1/4 to 1/2 an inch .
