OT- For knifemakers and collectors pt 2

As promised, some pics of what I picked up last week and the problem child I need advice on.

This is the Big Bend Skinner:

The scales are just held on right now with the screws, no adhesive yet. I haven't decided if I want/need to give this blade a high polish or leave it as is for working usage.

No pics but I also got the CC4 Cowboy Classic kit with the sheath.

Here's the problem child:

I think I cut the shape of the scales wrong. Not having a pic of the finished product, I really don't have any idea what shape it should be at the front of the tang or exactly where it should fit. Before that little finger guard on the bottom? Contour it to match the guard?

Once I figure outwhat design they should be, I have this on hand to choose from for replacements:

California Buckeye Burl on the left, Corrugata Burl on the right, both stabilized.

So at this point, I rally need ideas/info on what to do for the compact skinner scales. Ideas? Suggestions?

I like that first one just the way it is. I don't think it needs polished.

I have no imagination, I am no help with the "problem child".

Those slabs at the bottom look beautiful. Very, very nice. :D

Did you think that you cut your scales too short? You seem to be asking if the should extend to and countour to match the fingerguard. That is probably not done that much. Look at the other knife pics you posted- the scales stop well short of the fingerguard, and are rounded. In addition they slope a bit back towards your hand at the top. I've seen them sloped at the top, sloped at the bottom, rounded a lot, rounded not much at all. It's a matter of opinion and taste. You can look at knife pics on the net and find different styles, then pick one that you like.

I like a taper forward and back so the middle of the handle is the thickest area. Viewed from the top, you'll see a diamond with truncated points where the ends are squared off. Grind a piece of scrap and try it in your hand before cutting the good stuff - the knife will handle like a pencil - very precisely.

bj94 has the right idea,

I would see how it would look with the front end radiused with the
center lined up with the front pin (cardboard cutout). Grind the back end down a little if needed.

Corrugata Burl gets my vote.

So at this point, I rally need ideas/info on what to do for the compact skinner scales. Ideas? Suggestions?

I planned to radius the front of the scales but after doing a rough mock up it looked like they were too short based on the pin holes.

Cardboard mock up...DOH! :oops:

I think you should do another big bend skinner with the California Buckeye
Burl slabs ....

and send it to me so I can test it for a few years !!!!! and don't polish it..
it look great as is ..

yep that's the ticket ... pm me for the address ... I'll even cover postage ..

You could elongate that pin hole and give yourself a little more room for the rivet.

I really like this blade pattern and have done dozens of them for folks. Believe it or not, it is a great field knife, and was popular with guys in Alaska!

Anywho! This the the way I mounted the scales on a couple of them. :wink:

The top is mounted with fossil walrus and the bottom with black linen micarta and green pearlite (I think!). :lol:

The sheath is smoked moose hide and buckskin.
