They look like regular folk to me. I would like to see which calibers are represented there. I would bet on .30-30 for a couple. There is probably at least one in a caliber that is no longer available as a factory option, but that is an easy guess since the 94 is out of production.

Nice, any idea what happened to the M95? Just think about all the knowledge and experience they had. Todd/3leg
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

Re: What a picture! Lever deer hunters circa 1945
Gary,
I was born in 45, so I really relate to that picture, saw lots of pictures of my dad, my grandpa, and dad's brothers
much like that. I wished I still had them. Grew up shooting deer with my 94 32 SP, my great aunt gun, she used to
shoot mule deer in Eastern Oregon near Silver Lake. It became my gun when she died when I was about 10 years old.
My dad also had a 94 in 32 SP . It's all we ever hunted deer or bear with. I wished I had kept those pictures like the
one you posted. Great Picture

Fred...I noticed that but I think it's a photo issue. Upon looking at many old pictures I see just about every gun has little to no finish.....and it just can't be that way in most every old picture. It must have something to do with the light or exposure. ---6

Hey mag tip.....we hunted pretty near each other....I spent a lot of time hunting near Renova, near Snowshoe....about 10 miles back in from the main road, 144.....deep into the coal strippins. Just about where rt 80 comes onto 144. Sure was good hunting there in the sixties through the eighties. Ain't much here anymore as far as deer are concerned.----6

Six, you are the guy who would know old Winchesters. A friend has one that was made in 1921. It indeed has little or no finish as these appear in the picture.

Re: What a picture! Lever deer hunters circa 1945
Looking at the 94s again I notice the left most one is a pre-war with the sight behind the barrel band and the other two are newer ones with the ramp front sight. The one on the right looks like a flat band as well.
Gary, are these guns still in their respective families hands?

Not sure Joe ...I hunt with 2 great nephews of 2 of the guys in the photo. Did hunt with pecks relative as well but he passed about 10 years ago. Most were from the belleville ontario area. Gary
Re: What a picture! Lever deer hunters circa 1945
Awesome Picture!
One thing I noticed is that some of the hunters were getting long in the tooth and they didn't wear glasses or have peep sights on the rifles.
That tells me either they had exceptional eyesight or they weren't preoccupied with moa accuracy as long as they could shoot minute of deer!!

Re: What a picture! Lever deer hunters circa 1945
The rifle at the very left appears to be a 92 Carbine in either 25-20 or 32-20. It has a short loading gate. Also, it has a barrel band with the mag tube attached to the barrel using a ring dovetailed into the barrel toward the end (like 86 and 94 rifles). If it were a 38-40 or 44-40 it would be fitted with two barrel bands.

I wonder that since they didn't have TV or computer screens to burn their vision out on if their eyes were better then?geobru wrote: ↑Fri Nov 09, 2018 8:54 pm Awesome Picture!

I think there are a couple factors.
First, these guys were mostly meat hunters. They weren't preoccupied with what the rack scored when they saw the deer, just getting on target.
Second, most only owned one rifle, and it got used a lot more than the average deer hunters rifle today.
When they shouldered it, it was already mostly aligned.
Remember your BB gun? It wasn't accurate, had crappy sights and a lousy trigger, but you could hit anything.
I think mostly, they only needed eyes good enough to see the deer. The rest was mostly reflex. The ranges were short.
