OT - Gun Finishes

Post by cnjarvis »

I have a Sig SHR 970 that has a powder coat type finish (nitron or similar) that my future BIL managed to scratch the !@#$ out of.

Sig no longer imports or services these rifles stateside and sending it to Switzerland isn't really an option so the 64K question is: What to touch up the finish with or what to use to refinish the barrel entirely?

The original finish is a satin black and I'd like to go back to something very similar.

Any suggestions? (besides strangling my BIL)

I have no personal experience with the Sig finish you describe. You might have to consider having the rifle completely refinished in another finish that will be close but probably not exactly the same. Or make a few inquiries to some of the custom finish outfits and see what they say about possibly matching the original finish.

Are you sure you want to get Married?.....You can't be hangin around a Brother in Law that will mess up a fine rifle such as that Sig. Better think about it, it's still not too late.

I don't have to worry much as he lives in Kalifornia. He probably won't be borrowing a gun again though. I will give the guy credit though, he "fessed-up" to it when we got back to the truck and I had a chance to look it over. He also offered to pay for repairs.

I don't think refinishing the whole rifle will be necessary as the barrel on the SHR 970's can be removed with an allen wrench.

Thanks Mich Hunter, I'll check into that.

I like the Brownell's finishes. They are durable and most of them are easy to apply. I'm also looking into using the DuraCoat finish from Lauer Custom Weaponry. I'm going to order some and see if I like it. Some people I've talked to say it's pretty good stuff. Here's the link. They've got just about every color one could think of. It can be applied to wood, plastic, stainless, or just about any other surface.
