OK Pitchy...What Are These?
Pitchy,
As you are one who appreciates and is knowledgeable on fine antiques, you need to tell me what these are. They are solid copper...except the handles, obviously hand made and come from a time when people had to do their own things in order to survive. The one on the right is Revolutionary War era and the left one is around Civil War era. I know the history on the right one and it came from the famous Eutaw House, an inn and restaurant in Centre County, Pa. Edgar Allen Poe was an occasional lodger there and probably consumed what came out of it.
Well?----6

Buckets -- for their bucket lists obviously.
Well in that case -- they must be chamber or pee pots!

Often used for cooking candy - even hundreds of years ago. Still quite popular in modern confectionery establishments.

I thought Poe was reputed to "Chase The Green Fairy". That would mean those were for cooking something like sour mash.

Re: OK Pitchy...What Are These?
It's just folk lorelore that Poe was there. We used to have a hunting cabin right down the road from the Eutaw House and I left there a few times not knowing if it was day or night. My dad, always on the lookout for deals on antiques went to the Eutaw House back in the eighties when they were having an auction...after new owners taking over......he picked it up for a song...IIRC about a c-note.
My dad also had a thing for these copper pots....owning 4 or 5. According to him, people used to make apple sauce and other preserves using these pots. The people would fill the pot with apples, strawberries, whatever and boil em down, add the sugar, whatever, then can it.
The older one is rare as the bottom is dovetailed to the sides, a very tedious and time consuming job but that mattered little at the time as regular folk cared little above being in a rush in those days before soccer practice, clothes shopping, movie watching and other mindless entertainment took over our culture.----6

That's cool stuff bud! Nothing much like that around here. We didn't even have fire up here till the 1950's.

Re: OK Pitchy...What Are These?
Yea Pitchy, maybe so...but this was a time even before crank wringers came out and brown stains went clear through the pants and the chair they sat on. life was so simple then that some people put 2" holes in the middle of the seat of the chair they were sitting on and put an old piece of cardboard on the floor under the seat. My dad told me his dad was so cheap that he made the kids reuse the cardboard by shaking it out the door, sometimes falling short and sticking on their bare feet.----6

Ain't that somethin'! 1950's you say. Wow. Pitchy told me that they have a new invention in Minnesota that is a small piece of stick and you rub it on your pants and it makes a fire! Geeze, what will they think of next?-----6

Re: OK Pitchy...What Are These?
Heck, if you want to believe that crazy talk about making fire with a stick, I think I could get you to believe that we fling dried cow patties just for fun out in Beaver, OK, and that women in Liberal, KS run a race every year while carrying a skillet with a pancake in it.

Piller,
We have tire chuckin' contest and a foot race where you have to carry your wife. With some, it's easier if she carries the husband.

Re: OK Pitchy...What Are These?
Six,
We used to make apple butter in a copper kettle that was much bigger that that. We would put all the apples into the kettle and heat it up over a fire outside. We had a large "L" shaped paddle to constantly stir with to keep it from burning. We would also put 5 or 6 silver dollars in the bottom to keep it from sticking as well. It was an all day deal starting early in the morning.
