on another post the California legislators mindset came up, it reminded me of something I saw in American Hunter (don't have it handy).
One of the senators is working on an order to exterminate the entire elk population of a coastal island (Santa Cruz Island?) because they don't want the herd to be hunted every year - it's too cruel.
The herd has to be culled one way or another, and I believe they can't stop the hunting for some reason, so they are just going to eliminate hunting by killing all the elk. Because it's an island, the herd won't come back.
Makes liberal sense, don't it?
Does anybody know more about this?

It was on Santa Rosa Island, is this a SECOND incident? I guess that issue will continue to be fought over. Of course the NPS has their view as well. Diane Feinstein is willing to destroy all these animals rather than relocate them. I wonder how PETA feels about that. Oh, yeah, PETA kills more of their rescues than any other group. Never mind. Of course, they wouldn't want servicepeople to hunt there either. I guess hunting is too violent for them (yeah, that's sarcastic).

Pt. Reyes Nat'l Seashore, California is already under the gun. This area was formally a privately owned ranch with legally introduced exotics. Even though the ranch was not for sale, Feds "bought it" and ousted the owner and ceased hunting. For many years, Park Rangers shot "excess" deer at night to control the poplution of fallow deer and axis deer. In late 1970's all shooting was halted. Predictably, the deer population rose at expontential rate.
Right now, as I type this: A cull hunting outfit from New Zealand is paid to shoot 1,000 animals. A darting program to produce non-ovulating does begins in September. The total cost is estimated to be $1.6 million. California Gov't has raised protests but the FEDS are in control, same as Channel Islands.
This is a sad day for the future of hunting by common sportsman.

PS Barbara Boxer is a US Senator (FED). The Channel Islands are FED.
