Shot a Henry Big Boy today

Post by handirifle »

Took the wife and one son to the range today. When we were near finished a guy shows up and I was admiring the Henry. Big Boy, 357, octoganal barrel.

Looked like this one.

He let me shoot some rounds through it. I shot 6 rounds and let me tell you, I WISH my Marlin was that smooth.

WOW! I was very impressed. It cycled very smooth, and handled like a dream. I was shooting at some steel plates at 50yds and the sights were very nice.

I really wondered what you 357 guys liked before, but I see now. very fun to shoot.
Finish was flawless and the bluing was very deep blue.

I guess for $879 it should be, but it was nice.

Find a Marlin Cowboy mechanic and have your Marlin tuned, It will be slicker than that Big boy.

Lefty Dude,

I think what handirifle meant, but did not say, is that the Big Boy is that smooth & slick right out of the box. There is no tuning to be done it.

But for how much? I would like it to be that smooth. And yes the Henry, like always, was that smooth brand new.

Take your Marlin completely apart. Clean it very good and lube it. Then load up or buy several hundred FULL house .357 mag loads and go shoot them. The act of firing live ammo from it will smooth it out.

Been there done that, still got the brass.

I haven't shot the big bores but I have the .22 levers and they are very smooth, no doubt.

I don't really care for them though - just the looks or something. They look like a toy gun or something - you know, the way the toys are kinda like a "name that brand" rifle but they have lots of things "wrong"...

Just the way I see em.

Maybe I shoulda been clearer in my first post. MY Marlin, is an 1895GS. I don't think the 357 loads would do much for it :D .

Sorry I didn't mention WHICH Marlin I had.

I like the Henry .22s, but those Big Boys just look strange to me. It's almost as if someone took one of the old GI Joe guns and scaled it up. The proportions are all wrong, to my eye.

I agree. The other beef I have with the Henry Repeating Arms Company is how they advert gimmick a historical linkage with the original 1860 rifle etc.Hogwash. :x

I was trying to come up with the words but that pretty much sums it up. I was thinking ugly. I just can't wrap my mind around 'em.

I never thought I'd have much use for the Big Boy, too heavy and shiny for my tastes. But then I borrowed my dad's 44 mag. Big Boy and was very impressed. It's of the most accurate 44 lever guns I've ever shot and very smooth.

Well that's OK. Other than the length of the action the principle is the same. Shooting them will smooth them out.
