Plan interrupted by Marlin
I've been collecting $25 gift cards during the weekly grocery trips to save up for a new 1911.
During lunch at work I like to stop by the new Cabela's that's just around the corner from work. I've been watching and waiting for one of the 1911s I've been looking at to go on sale or for a good one to pop up in the gun room. Well they hide the gun room behind the used rifle rack so I always glance at it on my way past and look for levers.
This week I notices they had a couple out I hadn't seen on the rack before. I pulled the straight stock off the rack first and looked at the tag. It was a Marlin 1894 .357. As I looked it over, I decided it seemed to be in pretty good condition and had the JM stamp. Then I realized it had no cross-bolt safety. I asked them to unlock it so I could could it and check the bore.
Then I asked them if they could do any better on the $550 price tag. Unfortunately, they would only offer a $10 discount so I decided to think about it. I decided that it was probably worth that to me, so the next day I picked it up.
I figured they are still making the new 1911s, but a pre-safety Marlin in .357? Nope these they don't make anymore.

I love 1911's but you'll always have the chance to pick up a nice one, the older Marlin 94's are not as easy to come by, you did a good thing and gave a great carbine a warm and caring home.

Re: Plan interrupted by Marlin
From what I've heard the 357 Mag ones are getting pretty high prices when they [rarely] come up for sale, so I think you got a GREAT deal...!

All of my issues with the M1894c rifles aside (see my posts on "fixing" them) I think you "done good".
I probably would have done the same... if for no other reason than premium trade fodder.

Wish they gave away $25 gift cards at my grocery store.

Welcome to the forum !
That .357 Marlin was seriously underpriced, like by about 30% - Nice snag !
Although Cabela's usually has high prices, every once in a while they price a gun they perceive to be a run-of-the-mill whatever well below it's true/current market value.
It ALWAYS pays to snoop in their used gun racks. ';)

That's half of what mine sold for, AT AUCTION, about a year ago.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.

Yeah, it would be great if they gave them away. Unfortunately, they get added to the weekly bill.Bill in Oregon wrote: ↑Sun May 07, 2017 9:16 am Wish they gave away $25 gift cards at my grocery store.

Fantastic score!
Like you and everyone else said, another 1911 will always present itself.

Re: Plan interrupted by Marlin
I haven't been able to find a Marlin .357 anywhere. I'd say you did good!
