Soak it hot, or cold pack???
Last Friday as I was getting in the tub for a shower my left foot slipped out from under me. My right knee was out of the tub and when I crashed down it took the brunt of my fall.
My wife was in the kitchen and told me she thought the house was falling in . At any rate my leg was horribly bruised just below the knee towards the inside.
It's swollen so tight the skin is painful and the joints are stiff.
Had a Dr apt Monday for something else and had him look at the leg. He didn't say much.
Later I called them back and all they said was to elevate it. My wife thinks I should should soak in a warm Epsom salt bath, but I'm thinking of cold packing it.
What do you guys think?
Joe

Re: Soak it hot, or cold pack???
I am a huge fan of ice. It should only be put on for 30 minutes at a time.
Re: Soak it hot, or cold pack???
Blaine stated what I have learned. Ice for swelling. When the swelling goes down, heat for healing. Ibuprofen helps with the swelling. A Doctor would probably prescribe 800 mg of ibuprofen every 6 hours for about 3 to 5 days. I am not a Doctor, and can only advise you to check with your Doctor before doing that. If you take that much, take it with food to minimize the stomach irritation. Again, check with your Doctor before taking that much. 800 mg ibuprofen is still prescription strength.

What everyone else said, plus get moving and even when elevating it, keep flexing your foot to work the calf muscles. The reason is to prevent deep blood clots. That is the riskiest thing with leg injuries.

Re: Soak it hot, or cold pack???
First, find a new doctor. While it appears to be mostly soft tissue injury, an x ray at the very least should have been done. Both you and your wife are right. Alternate between heat and ice. Keep it elevated (at least they got that right). Ibuprofen as mentioned. While it may hurt, try to keep it moving. Nothing huge to start with, just gentle flexing without weight on it.

Drink a lot of pineapple juice. Have seen that work wonders.
Re: Soak it hot, or cold pack???
Pinapple juice and papaya both have blomelain. It is a chemical which has the benefit of busting up clots. It is a good idea with all that bruising.
