Wife's new toy

Post by Buffboy »

It's here, I got the scope mounted and she's pretty happy with it. I haven't gotten any ammo loaded yet. Maybe I'll have time later this weekend to get some test rounds started. The guy from AA was straight up about it's pluses and it's minuses.

Savage 99, 300 Savage, made in 1924, barrel measures 20.5". It's been re-blued, drilled for a scope and had the stock cut for a recoil pad. It also has an old repair to the stock but it seems solid so I won't be replacing any wood right away, but probably will eventually. The sling swivels look factory(the front stud replaces the forearm mounting screw) or at least like they've been there a LONG time. As a collector it's pretty much not one. The bore is bright, has good rifling, locks up like new, and shows no muzzle wear, so what it lacks in collector value it should make up in the shooter category(paid $328 shipped then gave my buddy $20 for the transfer). She says it is about the same weight as her Ruger compact in 243.

It was missing the rear sight so I got a fold down when I ordered reloading supplies and dies. I should have ordered a blank, I could use one anyway. The scope's covers won't go on over the sight so I took it off again.

FYI, I had to use high offset rings to mount the scope.

I would be happy too. :D The 300 savage cartridge has allot of potential for critters larger than a 243 should be tackling. 8)
