Hey Mike,
Didn't you shoot that yak with an 1876 in 45-75? I remember watching that sucker get knocked flat by that rifle. It was pretty amazing to see.

Ben_Rumson I think that's a picture of Stomp, if it is he hunted a lot of game with that .45 colt.

A friend of mine got another nice muley buck with his original Win 94 in 25-35 this year, it was his first rifle as a boy. I think it was made in 1952.
He has shot black bear, antelope, deer and a boat load of coyote with that rifle.

I'm down to four levers . A circa 1905 Winchester Model 1894TD in 30 WCF that I rarely shoot anymore and a trio of Marlins in 444 from 1966 , 1967 and 2001 . And each year I used ally kill several with various home cast bullets in the trio .

Just killed a Canada moose Sept. 29, east of Hundred Mile House BC. I used my Marlin 338 Express.
270 yards, 200 gr. Hornady, one shot didn't get a second, he went down so fast. I don't hunt with
anything but lever guns. Have killed bear, deer, moose and smaller game all with lever guns in the
last few years. The moose was really big, waiting for my taxidermist to get my antlers finished.
Will try to post a pic when I get them up.

Old Savage, I remember him saying he loads 117g and 125g and 87? for small game.
That rifle is his constant companion on the ranch, he goes through a lot of ammo and is always on the hunt for brass.

Yes, I do! Living in Norway, all my hunting friends are using bolt action rifles. I have bought a used Winchester 94 AE cal 356 Win. Topped it with a Leupold VX-R Hog 1,25-4x20 and reloading my own cartridges. I also have bolt action rifles in cal from 6,5x55 to 358 Norma Magnum. These are longer and heavier, so I prefer my Win94 when I have to walk for hours. I have shot beaver, red deer and moose with my leveraction. This hunting season I have shot 3 mooses, all with the 220 grs Speer bullet. I don't trust this bullet for moose after I shot a moose bull in the shoulder joint. The bullet crushed the bone, but disintegrated and never made it to the lungs.
I think I have found the replacement: Barnes TTSX 200 grs. I used a file to make at FP of the blue plastic tip, and then it is ready for the tubular magazine. Now I hope to meet a moose next year to see if my new medicine will do the job. :D
Working up loads have been a challenge since the bullet is long. I have tested Norma 200 with good result. Max load 42 grs and OAL 2.56 gave ca 2.400 f/s.

Took 2 whitetail this year, one with my 1946 Savage 99EG in .300 Savage and one with a 1920 Model 99F in .303 Savage. Here's the .303 with a tender fork-horn.

My first 2 deer, 6pt and a doe, dropped to a pre 64 M94 .30-30 with a Lyman receiver sight. The doe was at 200 yards. My 140 class 9 pt went down to my old 336 .30-30 at 15 feet. Been shooting a LOT of other rifles, bolts, single shot, pump and muzzleloaders (33 of my 52 deer went down by frontstuffers) but with the recent acquisition of a truly superb Savage M99 .30-30 I think I've come home to stay.

Great thread I might have missed the first time around...

To answer the question -- I do!

I hunt deer in Maine (and coyotes when I see 'em) with this Savage 99A in .250-3000 -- but she's since been refinished to a low-gloss walnut color and professionally checkered too (had to add rubber patches before, as she was so slick to hold...). That's the first gun where I'd ever seen my bullet hit "the exact hair" (or close to...) that I was aiming at -- I'd never seen shots from much larger calibers impact before.

Tight groups.

Leverguns are about all I hunt with anymore. I have two Marlin 336 30-30s, one with a scope and one with a Williams peep. Also a Marlin 1894ss in .44 magnum and a Marlin 1894C in .357 magnum with a Skinner peep. I've taken deer with the .44 and the scope-sighted 30-30 and hogs with the peep sighted .30-30. The .357 has taken hogs and squirrels. Oh, yes, I almost forgot my Henry .22.

Last years buck was taken with a 1894 trapper made in the 1980's with Barnes bullets which I haven't been fond of in higher speed loads but they did a fine job.

Not exactly "hunting", but a target of opportunity:

When I went looking for this image, I couldn't believe so much time has passed... maybe I need to get out the wounded rabbit call and try some "hunting"! Also glad to know my pastures are in much better condition this year! Guess those farm chores pay off!!

We're going to have to go out shooting sometime Tanqeuray. I have to shoot something next with that .32 Special you put me onto.

Sounds like a plan CH. I hope to get down to the South Island again sometime, so far the furthest south I’ve been is St Arnaud.
Likewise, if you’re ever up this way let me know. I’ve yet to blood my 1892 or 1894 either, and not for lack of trying either!

I have far more efficient rifles, but I try to take my 336 30-30 out and shoot one doe a year. Somehow it just feels more sporting.
