OT - Ruger Blackhawk Parts Question
Here's one for you Ruger 'smiths.
A friend needs the ejector parts, rod, spring, housing, and screw, for an Old Model Blackhawk.
Ruger won't send out as much as a screw for an old model, it must be returned to them for their "safety" modifications, at which time the needed parts will be installed (for a "fair" price I'd imagine), and your Now "New Model" old Blackhawk will be returned to you.
Does anyone know if New Model ejector parts are the same as were used for the Old Model?
$20.00 for New Model parts is a lot better than Ruger "fixing" an Old Model.

What caliber Blackhawk?
Forget Ruger's parts department, go to Brownells to buy them.
The big bore Rugers, .44 and .45 had studded barrels that the ejector rod slipped over. The 41 might have had the stud too but I'm not sure.
The .357s never did have the stud.
If the gun in question is a .357 you can order steel ejector rod housings and the other parts straight from ruger by using the part numbers on their web site for a New Model.
~OR~
Go to Brownells.
The studded type ejector rod housings can be had OEM or aftermarket steel from Brownells.
The studded type ejector rod housings use the same internal parts as the other ones do. They also use the 1/4" diameter screw. Also available from Brownells.
Now, why do I keep mentioning Brownells? Cuz you can get darn near everything you need for your Old Models from them without sending your gun to Ruger for the corruption ...... 'er safety update.
http://www.brownells.com/
Tip: The early New Model Super BHs used the studded barrel ejector rod housing. Go to Brownells listings for the SBH and you'll find the studded ejector rod housing and screw.
But .......... what caliber is it would have saved a lot of typing.

According to Brownell's part numbers teh screw and rod are the same. Spring and housing are listed as N/A for the Old Model.
Guess I'll just have to try parts from one of my New Models and see if they fit, or can be SLIGHTLY modified to fit.
Wish all my friends would want stuff from Brownell's at the same time. Good thing they don't have a "minimum" order, and small package shipping is only $4.95.

From Hoot...
OM's had standard length housings, springs and rods. To be period correct, there are several variations. Steel housings, differing rod shapes, screw mounted and barrel studs, etc. As far as I know, Ruger settled on the 'pie' shaped cross section rod and tapped hole in the barrel before they introduced the NM.
Long way of saying, 'pretty sure'.

Any old model that goes in for work WILL be updated. There have been rumors that they don't always send back the parts now. Some folks just can't abide that much less not getting their parts back as it is THEIR gun NOW.

A viable option would be to srtip out the OM lock parts, and send in the barrel/frame etc, to be fitted for the correct EJH.
When it comes back converted, strip out the conversion parts, re-install the original parts, and you'll be good to go.
BTW - Ruger marks every OM revolver they convert by stamping the letter "R" into the bottom surface of the cylinder frame where it will be hidden by the installed gripframe's triggerguard.

Yance,
Read my LIPS .... or text.
Since it is a .357 then the current New Model ejector rod housing and ejector rod, and the spring, and the screw WILL fit.
Ignore the parts listing and order the New Model parts from Brownells.

That's exactly what I'd do; did it with an old single six and haven't regretted it.Pete44ru wrote:A viable option would be to srtip out the OM lock parts, and send in the barrel/frame etc, to be fitted for the correct EJH.

I usually get 3 day service from Brownell's so it should be ready to go back together no later than Monday.
Thanks to all for confirming what I was pretty sure I already knew.

That seems to confirm what Joe said. The pre '63 guns had steel housings. The early, early guns had ejector slots that prevented the ejector button from contacting the head of the base pin.
The .41's, .44's and .45's had barrels with a soldered on ejector screw stud well into the New Model days, like late '70's/early '80's before it was deleted.
So, the Old Model shooter had better get his act together prior to ordering parts from Brownells....... grin
Carl
PS The ejector buttons went through several changes up to early '58 when the current style was developed. (New Vaquero notwithstanding.)

Since this particular owner has no idea when the gun was made, much less what parts are "correct", he's getting the aluminum housing and "current" ejector rod head.
I tried the parts from my newest Now Model, 1997 Bisley .45 Colt and they worked just fine. Fired off the order from my "saved cart" and they shipped yesterday evening.
I made a trade offer on this gun, hope the guy takes me up on it. 4 5/8" Flattop would be a nice totin' gun.
