30 WCF Heavy weight bullets.

Post by LeverBob »

Howdy boys!

Anyone using heavyweight bullets in their Levers?

Pondering the old .303 Savage load: 190 grainer at about 1900fps.

After seeing the animal heavyweights in the pics, it makes a lot of sense to me. I'm using an RCBS 180 grainer in mine that casts about 190 grs. & comes in at about 195 grs. with lube & check.

What about y'all?

I have not tried anything heavier than the 180, but a buddy of mine using his 33WCF for long range shooting, and he is using a 200 grainer. Says it gets him out to 500 meters.

I use thatr bullet a lot in two of my 30WCFs i use 30 Grains of varget . Used to use 31 grains no problme with pressure but 30 gives me better accuracy and jsut over 1900fps its a real good load

Leverbob,

That RCBS bullet is a good one. Bullets from mine weigh 189 grs w/ g.c.
I use a capacity load of H414 which goes 2,120 f.p.s. in a 24" barrel with great accuracy.

I also shoot a 205 gr. Old West (2,080 f.p.s.) and Lyman's 311284 (220 grs. - 2,010 f.p.s.) also using H414. I had the loads checked at a ballistics lab for pressure and, surprisingly, they ran almost 10% less than SAMMI MAP for the .30-30. That slower burning H414 (or W760) is great powder for heavy bullets in the .30-30. :D

Thanks to all who replied, especially you W30!

What are your loads for the lyman 284 GC using H414? I have never used this powder. It seems to me that this would put the 30WCF in the class of a 30-40 Krag, which is real good power indeed. Also, where can I get a hold of Old West, I would like to try that bullet also.

Thanks Much fellas!
