mini range report
Taking a break from cleaning rifles and watching basketball, after range trip. It was cold !!!and snowing here in British Columbia. Everyone needs a Savage 99 in 300 Savage! Checking zero on two today, a 99R with Leupold 3x scope and a 99EG (rejected by a collector, got for $300
) both getting 1" groups at 100meters, the EG with a Redfield receiver sight. No kick to speak of and the EG feels like a feather in the hand, very delicate, sweeet! If I was only hunting whitetail deer this would be the only rifle I'd ever need. I think those old guys were right on the money about this rifle/calibre combo. On the otherhand my Browning1895 produced barn door accuracy
,I haven't figured it out yet at all. Back to the game....
Wind blowing like crazy here. Snow storm on the way by tomorrow. At 7200' elevation we get some bad weather here until late in the year too.
Every time I drag out my 99 rifles we have a ball with them and they do surprise me still with how well they shoot. My great uncle always said the best elk rifle made was his 99 300 Savage. You could pack it all day and shoot a bunch farther than a 30-30. He was just an old cowboy/rancher born on our ranch on the Smiths Fork river, but did a bunch of hunting in his day.
