RANGE REPORT: Custom Win 1895 in 30-06

Post by Noah Zark »

Some of you may recall my post on the old board last October when I picked up this little gem:

Image

It's a later-model '95 in 30-06 with original barrel, bright bore, and ultra-sharp rifling. Someone has tastefully re-done it in a workmanlike manner, blueing the metal and installing a furniture set made from bird's eye maple. The checkering is hand-cut and SHARP, and the fit to metal is unbelieveable. When I saw this '95 on the seller's rack at a firehall show, it fairly reached out and dope-slapped me. With the light-finished maple furniture, it's like stepping into a way-back machine set for the 1950s or 1960s when blonde stocks and bird's eye maple was all the rage for sporterized military boltguns and custom guns in general.

Fast forward: I had it out recently to the range after installing an ivory bead front sight blade to replace the glare-prone gold bead that it came with. Having a PILE of M2 Ball ammo, I figured to see what it could do with that venerable round. I set up clay birds on edge on the 50 yd and 100 yd berms and after making a slight windage adjustment I was able to pick off the orange discs at will, at either range, offhand. Recoil is actually quite tolerable if not comfortable, due to the weight of the rifle. On paper at 100 yds from a sandbag, I fired two five (5) shot groups, one at 1-3/8" and the other at 1-1/2". I apologize for not having a photo of the targets, but my wife is efficient at tossing stuff in the trash. She went to the range with me, and apparently the targets didn't even make the trip home; they ended up in the trash barrel we parked next to.

I'd rather look at the picture of the rifle, anyway.

That's really sharp!

First Winchester I ever bought was/ is a 95 SRC .30-06 that had been altered but I felt the same way. It just said "Take me home".

That 95 & I have traveled a lot of trails and knocked off quite a few white tail.

It doesn't come up for me either - I'd sure like to see it - being a fan of the 95 30-06.

Photo is up now and it is beautiful !!! Thanks. I'm convinced the Winchester 95 in 30-06 is the best and most practical rifle - at least for our lower 48 states.

Noah,
Beings that you and me go waaaaaaayyyyy back, can I have it? For real, that stock really stands out and I can see the w-m fit is outstanding. The guy who had that done spent some big bucks.

I think the maple stock thing is coming back a little. I'm starting to see more and more guns with that option. I remember back a little when I saw this original Colt Lightning rifle with a factory installed maple stock and booooyyyy, did I want that baby! :D The only thing that kept me from buying it was, I was about $15,000 short.--------Sixgun

Ah, no.

Not done playing with it.

That's what spoke to me when I saw it. A pro did the work, no doubt. The W-M fit is REALLY nice. I didn't like that the left side of the receiver had been D&T for a scope base, but it was professionally done and the plug screws were polished and blued to match, but I used that to dicker the price down.

. . . I think the maple stock thing is coming back a little. I'm starting to see more and more guns with that option . . .
I see more bird's eye maple and blonde wood on guns at shows anymore too. I've just chalked it up to guns of the 40s, 50s, and 60s coming out of estates, but it could very well be that some recent custom work is including blonde furniture.

As beautiful as it is, I'm thinkin how much better it would look with the white line spacer gone or colored black with a Sharpie.

I've had two bird's-eye/curly Maple stocked guns, over the years - one a half-stock -03 Springfield, and the other a mannlicher-type, full-length stocked 6.5x55 M-96 Swedish Mauser.

I kept the Swede as a Blonde - but stained the -03 to a dark hue, for a very striking look.
Maple is a hard wood, and can stand up to the rigors of use pretty well.

To get as pretty a grain in Walnut, it's either a very expensive grade, or Claro - which can have stability problems in rifle stocks.
