OT - Did anyone see/hear the Army choir today?

Post by Ysabel Kid »

They held a reception for Pope Benedict XVI at the White House today. The Army Choir sang "Battle Hymn of the Republic", and a soloist (civie) sang the Lord's Prayer. It was awesome.

Wish I could find a link to post this...

Very inspirational! I think the Pope like it, also!

The USMC has some darn good musicians and singers as well. Just as in the Corps, the Army musicians have a secondary task. Traditionally it was as field medics/litter bearers. They have indeed been used as infantry.

Oooh, do I detect a hint of inter-service rivalary? I seem to remember a certain jarhead drill team being favorably reviewed by one Sgt. Reed! Isn't that just "dancing with guns"?

I have to give you a load every now and again. My family line is all Army. Can't let you leathernecks have all the fun! As I told you, my son has expressed interest in the Marines; I think his ancestors are rolling over in their graves!

Now, let us all bring the various military branches together and pick on someone we can agree upon - the Air Force!

Just a couple of months ago I had the opportunity to watch the Marine Drum and Bugle Corps as well as the Silent Drill Team. Both mighty impressive. Military bands help build patriotism and respect for our armed forces among the American people and citizens of other nations, same with the Blue Angels, Thunderbirds, Golden Knights, etc. A very good way to spend some of my tax dollars in my estimation.

I will tell you that when I play a recording of any service band playing in our shop the vets have to move out of the way and "look" at something else.

I not knocking anyone. Drum and Bugle Corps have been a military tradition since ancient Greece. And yes the Marine Corps has the Presidents own Drumb and Bugle Corps. Just struck me as odd that the Army has a Choir is all.

The Corps has a decent choir, but they have to teach them to read music all over again after a three day pass........

Honestly, none of the "THE" DC military bands are truely in the Military......They sign an enlistment contract, take the oath, but no Basic that I know of and do nothing else. Most have advanced degrees in performance. The Army Division Bands and Post Bands are the real deal, though!!....in the Sand Box you will find them armed and doing MP work, and playing on their off time for the most part.......

The US has no monopoly on patriotic music. Here's an oldie but goodie, cuddle up with your Mosin-Nagant and a sip of vodka, turn up the volumn and enjoy the Red Army Chorus.

mav -

I've heard it before - used a lot when the Lord's Prayer is set to music. I don't know the specific name or version though. I think the lady was Kathy Battle, and her solo was accompanied by a harp. You could tell the Pope really enjoyed both the Battle Hymn of the Republic and, of course, the Lord's Prayer. They were both beautiful! :D

rjohns94 that was an awsome link, thank you very much.:D
My brother and I were(are?) in to marching bands. He didn't take it up when he got into the Air Force because of the extra time it took.

Drum Corps Int. is what you could call profesional marching bands. I would have loved to go after one of those teams if I had had the chance. Probably best though, cause I wouldn't have done well learning another set of fingering for their Eb horns. Or was it G? Hmm, what were we talking about....
